Breeding and Breeding Slots

  • Every time they level up, Dungeon Coursers earn Breeding Slots that you can redeem for breeding rolls to receive your own bouncing baby foals!
  • Breeding rolls are a combination two parent horses' traits created by staff using a custom gene roller—this is the only way Dungeon Courser foals can be made.
  • Typically, you will receive two foal options to choose from when you submit a breeding roll. The foal will be uploaded to your account for you to design, trade, or sell for Coin!
  • Breeding Roll Upgrade Items can be applied to customize or enhance your breeding rolls. After the foal is created, you can apply Genotype Upgrade Items to edit the geno of your choice.
  • Horses born in-game have pedigrees visible on the Lineage tab of their Profile. By clicking the Descendants link on a horse's profile, you can view all of that horse's children, grandchildren, and so on.

Breeding Slots

Dungeon Coursers receive 5 breeding slots when they reach Level 2, and 5 more every time they level up after that. Once your horse has acquired breeding slots, you may use them, trade them, or sell them to other players for Coin!

Every Courser's breeding slots can be viewed by clicking the Breeding Slots link on the left of their profile. From that page, you can view how many slots a horse has available to use, how many have been used, and how many have been reserved for use. To use a slot, click the 'Create New Permission' button on your horse's Breeding Slots page, and enter the username of whoever will use the slot. You may also enter a note for your own (or the recipient's) reference.

A slot must be reserved in a player's name to be used, even if the player is the horse's owner.

The Four Temperaments

You won't find "mares" or "stallions" in Dungeon Coursers; rather than having an assigned sex, every horse in the game is born with one of four Temperaments based on the humors of ancient medicine.

The Temperaments (and their stereotypical traits*) are:

  • Choleric: aggressive, intense, dominating and focused.
  • Melancholic: pondering, abstract, self-reliant and gloomy.
  • Phlegmatic: consistent, accepting, reserved and relaxed.
  • Sanguine: emotional, impulsive, charismatic and pleasure-seeking.

No two horses with the same Temperament can breed. There is no way to bypass this requirement, so keep Temperaments in mind when planning your pairings! A horse's Temperament cannot be changed once their design is accepted.

* = Note that while the Temperaments are each associated with stereotypical personality traits, you are free to completely disregard them when developing and playing your characters! They are only for fun and flavor, not a requirement of any kind.

Rolling Twins

Every breeding has a 5% chance of rolling twins. In this case, you will receive two separate foals, each with two options.

Several items, including Potent Seeds and the Tome of Family Histories can increase the chance of rolling twins! Items can be applied when you submit your breeding.

Anomalies

Parents with Anomalies have a 25% chance of passing each Anomaly down to their children. This can be increased by applying items like an Unusual Root.

Additionally, all foals have a 5% chance of rolling a random Anomaly. If you don't want  your foal to have an Anomaly, you can simply leave it off.

Lethal White Syndrome

Possessing two copies of the Overo gene (OO) or the Dominant White gene (WW) results in a fatal condition known as 'Lethal White Syndrome.'

If a breeding results in a foal with Lethal White, that foal cannot be born. Slots and items will still be consumed, so plan your breedings with care!
Variants: Parents with Variants have a 25% chance of passing down their Variant with each roll; this chance can be increased by applying items like a Special Root.

Submitting a Breeding

There are currently no limits on how many breedings you can submit. This will likely change as we move through Beta and player activitiy picks up!

  1. Ensure that you have a Breeding Slot reserved for both parents, even if they are horses you own.
  2. Unless using a Tome of Timeless Romances, you must complete a unique piece of art or writing featuring the parents that is worth at least 50 Coin and submit it to the Breeding Rolls Gallery. This applies to all breedings, whether the parents are Group Horses or player-owned characters.
  3. Copy the URL of your gallery submission.
  4. Go to the Breedings form and paste the link to your pairing art in the URL field.
  5. Fill out the fields in the Comments section of the form, and attach both parents in the Characters field.
  6. If you are using any items for the breeding roll, attach them to the form and list the desired effect of each in the Comments section.
  7. Double check that everything is accurate!
  8. Submit your form :) Staff will upload your new foal(s) and attach them to your account.
