The Amulet

Yuudai slowly made his way through the maze of corridors with his current guide, Cerriden, keeping an ear out for any unwanted visitors. They hadn’t had too much trouble so far, minus the odd skeleton or lower monster, but one could never let their guard down. Down here in the deepest parts danger was very much real, and one slight, one misstep, could be your end. He’d heard rumors of nasty shadowy hounds, thankfully not encountering one yet, along with some other not so nice residence of the Moor. With great risk though came great reward, and the most valuable objects were mostly found down here, whether it be a shiny artifact or piece of written history.

“Woof”

Ah speaking of hounds. Yuudai looked down at his companion. He’d found this pup coincidentally down here as well, albeit not as deep as the Moor but up in the higher levels of the caverns. The poor thing had been badly hurt, and he did not hesitate to swoop up the pup and take him back home. His initial plan honestly was to simply fix the pup and either send it back or hand it over to Peyote, a known courser who took care of multiple kinds of creatures. The pup had wormed its way into his heart though and he just couldn’t part with it.

“What is it pupper?” Cerriden asked Fossil cheerily. Which Fossil proceeded to ignore her.

Yuudai gave the female courser a light smile. Fossil wasn;t the most other courser friendly but he’d seemed to tolerate their guide a bit. Fossil gave another woof and trotted on after a scent leaving them to catch up. They entered a small chamber with a few boxes and furniture strewn about. All looked old and mostly decayed but one particular box stood out to him. Yuudai cautiously approached and eyed it over for any booby traps or nasty surprises. Fossil sniffed the box but just looked up at Yuudai with no hint of anything alarming.

Cerriden happily trotted over and inspected the box, “I think we should open it!”

With a shrug he opened the box. It revealed mostly a bunch of tarnished wares and nothing of interest, except a glint caught his eye. Reaching down he grabbed onto the object and lifted it out to reveal a gorgeous shining amulet.

“Hmm”

He gave it a look over and gave a mildly pleased nod of approval. This would do. As he started to place the amulet in his bags something caught his eye. It was a symbol engraved on it. He squinted at it confused, was that….his coat of arms? He frowned in concern and glanced around. What in the world was this doing here. Yuudai and Fossil shared a look. Cerriden was busy looking through the rest of the junk in the room oblivious. They soon brushed it off and decided maybe it would be best to make their way back up for now. As they made their way back a cold chill had settled in the air setting Yuudai’s hair on end. Something wasn’t right, something was skulking about and more than likely not a friendly. Fossil began growling and snapping ahead. Readying themselves, the three treaded slowly forward.

Hisssssssssssss

Head how, ears pinned, teeth bared. Yuudai and Fossil immediately slid into a defensive stance. Their foe appeared before them out of the shadows. It was- Yuudai didn’t even know how to describe it. At first glance it was equine but upon a closer look it wasn’t quite. Its eyes glowed red, its body scrawny and gaunt like bones wearing the thinnest layer of cloth over it. The snap of its joints and the way it trudged around was more canine-ish. The entity and they starred at each other for a while, assessing and gauging each other. Would it attack or leave them be? More than likely a fight was imminent but Yuudai wouldn’t jump in immediately just in case. It lunged without warning and the two parties clashed. Yuudai gave it a solid kick to the flank while Fossil went for its legs. Just as fast as it begun the fight was over, and the creature screamed its outrage as it ran away.

“What. Was. THAT?!” shreiked Cerriden.

“I’m not sure but I’d like to not hang around here for a second go.”

Cerriden nodded in agreement. Yuudai quickly checked on his companion and the three gathered themselves together quickly and hurried out of the Moor.
