[DD2] DD2 - 'Home'

For Nazgul and Khamûl, "home" is a concept wrapped in shadows and echoes, a word they barely understand but sense in fragments. Nazgul knows it as a place that feels calm—not safe, necessarily, but somewhere she can lower her guard without danger creeping in. For her, the closest thing to a home exists in the darker, quieter depths of the dungeon where she’s grown accustomed to the shadows, where the walls feel like a familiar embrace.

Khamûl, however, experiences "home" differently. It’s not a place, but a person—or, more accurately, the presence of Nazgul. To him, her rough patience and fierce protection are more comforting than any stone walls or hidden corners. When their adventures bring them to the edges of the Furnace or other treacherous realms, Khamûl feels an instinctive draw back to the quiet places they came from, the ones where he can rest without the searing heat or snarling creatures that roam the deeper levels. For Khamûl, home is the moment Nazgul stops moving, the moment they can be still together, the moment he can lower his hand from signing and feel a strange, ghostly contentment.

Neither Nazgul nor Khamûl belong to the surface. Nazgul's only glimpses of it are the skeletal remains of those who once lived in sunlight—a place she finds harsh and glaring, a far cry from the soft glow of dungeon moss. She thrives in the shadows, her blue roan coat blending into the darkness, her senses attuned to the silent, unseen dangers of the underground. Khamûl, having no body, feels the surface is foreign to his existence; he’s tethered to the cold, dark spaces where only the echoes know his name.

So, when the adventure is done, they retreat to their familiar spaces: a quiet hollow deep in the dungeon where glowing fungi light the walls in cool blues and greens, far from the raging heat of the Earthern Furnace. They rest side by side, Nazgul’s wary eyes half-closed and Khamûl's ghostly form faint but at ease, a sense of comfort threading between them. In the stillness of the dungeon, they are as close to home as either of them has ever known.
