[DD2] clarity
It would be ridiculous to think he's the only one down here, but the dungeon had been strangely quiet today. Just Carson and his unsettlingly large toad, taking on an environment that wasn't terribly hospitable to either of them. Shit, it wasn't meant to be. That's what made this a challenge, and that's what made it worth taking on. Only the brightest and bravest, or whatever. He could keep telling himself that. At least it makes what he's doing feel a little more worthwhile. Sure, the treasure was cool. The distraction? That's what he's really after. Distractions was the key, the only thing he can really rely on.
Was he lost? Not really. A little turned around? Sure. Not that it mattered all that much, as long as he kept moving. Carson could always turn back, if he needed to. With Boggy hanging out on his shoulder, there was an extra set of eyes to help out. The two walk, though it feels aimless. Endless. Why does the dungeon feel so eternal?
The first face he's seen all day, a leggy girl. Pale, spotted, and looking... confused. A map rolled out before her, certainly better crafted than his own-- Carson can tell that much, even at a distance. She was looking beseechingly at the unrolled parchment, like it was supposed to have the answers. Judging by her expression, those answers were pretty lost to her. Though Carson considers passing her by, the girl calls to him.
"Um, hi. Hello. Can you help me?" Her words are uncertain, made her sound like she was on the verge of tears. Carson doesn't speak, at least not at first, though he moves to her side.
"Help with what?" Though the answer is fairly plain.
"I'm pretty lost... I um. Last I knew I was around here." The girl taps a spot on the map, the broken down bridge. "But I got spooked and ran, and now I don't know where I am." Her tone is sheepish, bordering on defeated. "I um. I'm Brynn. Hi. Sorry."
Carson moves to her side, takes a peek at the map unfurled on the floor. Studying it for a long moment, tracing the location of the bridge back to the last landmark he'd seen-- the hallway filled with flames, marked on the map a little ways behind them. Triangulating it, as Brynn stands quietly, watches him work. "Carson. Here, it's okay. We're about here." He taps the spot with a careful hoof, taking care not to dirty her map in the process. A fatherly quality in his voice, even if he wouldn't admit it. "If you head back the way I came, and keep going past this hall with the trapped floor, take your first left and keep walking. Maybe an hour. It will lead you to the surface." He traces the route carefully, showing the girl which way to take.
For as helpful as the outlaw was, he'd also taken a good long look at the map. Drawing in the directions he can, it'll be enough to help him explore for the rest of the day. More clarity for Brynn, more clarity for Carson. Seemed like a rightful exchange, after all.
