Interlude 003: The Restless Dwarves in the Earthen Furnace
I had not at all expected that the Harvester would chose to reward me with a pet. Further, I would never have imagined that this pet would turn out to be a magical tree which was imbued with fiery energy.
It left a trail of ashes when it moved and was surrounded by a thin cloud of smoke which filled the air with the pleasant scent of a campfire.
"You will follow me now?" I asked aloud.
Yes, Master. My name is Jebadiah.
Just like with the scythe I heard it's voice in my mind.
"Welcome Jebadiah. I will take care of you," I promised.
The treant waved it's branches at me and swayed happily. I felt that it was extremely cute and given my past a druid, this was a fitting per for me. My only worry would be if he could keep up with me if I moved faster than a trot.
I cantered a bit to test it out and found that Jebadiah was able to push up his roots and scurry behind me at a very impressive rate. That put my mind more at ease.
Now that I had both a pet and a weapon, along with a map and other rations, I decided to head into the dungeons again. The trip to the entrance went quickly and when I stepped inside, I realized that I had been transported to a different place this time. There was an almost visible heat here, and the scenes of mining.
I checked the map and found a reference to the Earthen Furnace which on closer inspection matched my current location.
Then from there I headed into the next cavern.
This cavern was covered in the same ghostly pumpkin vines as the field I had not too long left but they were blackened as if they had been burnt. I went over to investigate, with Jebadiah following me.
Jebadiah went ahead of me when I stopped and poked at the vines inquisitively with his branches. He seemed to be searching for something. After a minute of this, suddenly two dwarven spirits appeared and instantly started to argue.
Jebadiah drew back to come to my side, and the argument between the two undead seemed to escalate. At first was unintelligible gibberish but now I kept hearing them argue about a forge. one of them seemed to catch site of me and turned to talk to me.
From then one they were muttered 'The Forge' and then disappearing.
They seemed to be unable to hold their form.
"Follow me and I will lead you home," I promised them.
I had to repeat myself a few times but eventually they pulled away from the vines and floated over to me. it seemed that this vine had been keeping them trapped here but my words allowed them to be freed.
Though I had bravely told them to follow me it soon became apparent when I lead them into the next room that some magical force was at play. Although it should have been simple to leave, I was not lost.
My map too was not yielding much help.
"The forgeeee" one of them moaned and he gestured wildly at me.
The other had a solemn expression on his face, he stroked his beard and then pointed in a direction.
I was about to tell him that there was no door there, but suddenly there was one.
I didn't think about it much more, I headed in that direction at haste which caused Jebadiah to have to scuttle behind me so quickly that he was causing a swirl of ash in the air.
having gone through this door, I was finally back in the beginning cavern.
I looked behind me and saw the door I just came through disappear before my eyes and then another open up in the other direction. I took a break to eat some rations because wandering around had made me a bit hungry.
I also wanted to see if the doors to the caverns were disappearing on a timed schedule so that next time I returned I would not be lost again. This was after all the second time in less than week that I had lost my way in a dungeon.
After watching I realized that the doors switched at fifteen minute intervals. I made a note of that information on the parchment I brough with me and also drew a rough map of the other four caverns I had been while ambling around lost.
Once that was done, I headed back to the field and ultimately to the portal with my two dwarven companions.
Just before they went in, they bowed a little to me as if to show thanks.
"You're welcome. Fly free," I responded.
The two floated into the portal together and disappeared in a flash of silver light.
"Well done, little horse," the now familiar voice said to me, "You will be rewarded."
Though I was glad for the promises of a reward my mind was heavy. Now that I had seen these spirits in a dungeon it made me wonder about how many more were similarly trapped. Silently I vowed that I would go as deep into the dungeon as I could and if I encountered anymore souls that I would do my best to lead them here.
Harvest Prompt 4: One dwarven spirit appears to you from a blackened Soul Vine in the Earthen Furnace. They seem to wish to speak to you, but they can only moan two words before they disappear into steam again: The Forge? The Forge?

Though the dungeons are well-trodden in the Age of Coursers, they are too vast to avoid getting lost occasionally. How is your sense of direction? What do you do when you realize you don’t know where you are?
