Step, step, step, crack. Shadow shook himself out of his thoughts at the snap of the branch beneath his hooves. It felt like he had been climbing for a while, but in all actuality it had only been a few minutes. The steps underneath him looked weird though and he cocked his head to the side as he stared.

         Suddenly a voice that sounded like thunder roared above him and his eyes went wide as he looked up. A face had suddenly appeared in the stone, or maybe it had been there all along and he just hadn’t paid enough attention. The thing’s next words were confusing to him, and not something he had heard about before. “Where is your knight?”

         Eyebrows furrowed as he stared at the face in the stone, how was Shadow supposed to answer? What was a knight anyway, was he talking about when the day turned dark?

         “The only night I know is the one that happens when the sun sets. What are you talking about?” 

         The rocks around him rumbled as the figure laughed at him. That was rude, why would he laugh at the stallion when he had never learned the word? Was he just expected to know? “Oh little courser, there is much to learn if you do not know what a knight is.” 

         “So tell me then rock.” Shadow snapped at him, feeling like he was being laughed at.

         “In due time little horse, but I do not think you deserve to know just yet. Especially since I have done nothing to you and you decide to be rude to me.” The stone’s eyes met his for a split second before looking away.

         Shadow snorted at the being as he stomped his hoof down on the stone underneath him, anger bubbling inside. “Fine, be that way. I’m leaving and not coming back.” Turning his back, he hopped down from the ledge and glared back once more before moving back towards the way he came.

         “Then don’t be mad when you never learn what a knight is. Remember that you were the one who chose your path.” All the being got was a tail flick in return as the stallion started into a trot. Too bad he decided to be stubborn, maybe he would’ve gotten his answer sooner rather than later.

         He reached the bottom and let out a frustrated snort as he slammed his hooves down on the ground in front of him. Luckily it was just dirt, anger issues were never good when rock was involved.
