The trials of the dungeon, and the dwarven furnace. - Halbert
The sun is setting on the long day, as the oranges and yellows hit along the tops of the roofs of all the buildings in the town. Halbert and his little cat companion just finished visiting Graymoore’s house, updating him on what had happened the past few days. “Have a safe trip Halbert” his friend waved as he left. “Thank you Graymoore!” he made his way to the entrance to the dungeons, as the moon started to rise, However this time the familiar creature named the harvester hadn’t showed up at the entrance like he usually had the previous night, so the light brown stallion looked around, his brown eyes darting back and forth in search of him. As it seemed like no one was going to show up this time, he figured he would do what he had been doing the past days, helping souls get to the afterlife. So with that in mind, he made his way through the caverns, Shadow sleeping on his back as the darkness encroached around him. The walls of the dungeon started off damp and wet, overgrown with the black soul vines, but as he went deeper and deeper the temperature started to rise, and the wetness started to turn to dry charcoal along the sides of the cave structure. As he made it to the opening of the earthen furnace, what he could see before him was stalactites along the roof, going on for miles and there was upper floors and lower floors, lava everywhere on the ground floor, and lava falls all around as a deep red tint hazed through the air. He made it to the edge of one of the lava pools, and there was a thin path going from this landmass to the next, so he had to carefully travers the narrow terrain. As the stallion made it halfway across, he noticed in the distance a giant red lava bat that had huge claws and molten rock hanging off its skin. Its dark red eyes staring directly at Halbert as he stood still. This hell bat started flying in his direction, with lava particles trailing behind the creature. It started screeching and Halbert quickly drew out his shield in an attempt to block the incoming attack. Once it started to get close, it opened its mouth wide and shot a huge fireball from it and it came barreling right towards the courser and instead of trying to block this devastating attack, he went ahead and started running across the narrow path to the otherside so he could fight better. The sounds of his hooves echoed through the giant cavern as he raced to the otherside, the hell bat shooting fireball after fireball in his direction, leaving fire along the path that he had taken to get where he was. Luckily the ground wasn’t destroyed, but later if he returns this way, he will have to take care of that fire. Once he had made it to the other side, Halbert quickly turned around and looked at the creature dead in the eyes. Even though he was scared, he wasn’t going to let this creature get the best of him, so he got his stance ready for its next fireball. As the hell bat flapped its wings, preparing for another attack, it shot forth a fireball that was bigger than all the other ones previously fired at the course, luckily he was ready as once it got close, he used his shield and blocked the attack and swung it as hard as he could to bounce it back at the hell bat. To halbert's surprise, it actually hit the enemy and the bat screeched in pain, as blood started spilling from its sides. It went ahead and shot another fireball at the courser but this time it was a lot faster. The creature was trying to use speed instead of power to overcome the courser. The black stallion was either skilled or lucky, because he was able to reflect this back at the bat as well, and got another direct hit. Its wings burnt up to a crispr, and fell out of the sky and hit the ground hard, unable to get up or fly away. If it was any other courser that had been battling this creature they would have ended it here and now, but Halbert was different. If he could, he would spare the creature, so in this instance he went ahead and let it live and put away his shield and continued through the lava caverns. After wandering a ways, and getting higher in elevation he noticed an old rusty weapon that was lying on the ground and when he approached it, a dwarven spirit appeared in front of him, the weapon surrounded by the black vines going up and down the blade. It had seemed to wish to speak to the courser, but they could only moan two words before they disappeared into steam again. “Hey wait!” Halbert called out to the spirit, as shadow jumped off his back and swatted at the vines along the sword. Halbert went ahead and inspected the sword and decided to hold onto it for now and would try to find the location the spirit was talking about. He didn’t know quite where to go, so he decided to keep on the path that he had been on. In that moment from the shadows of the dungeon, the harvester showed up from the shadows, the tall figure in his hood looked down at him, then looked in a direction. “Take the sword to the edges of the dungeon and repair it in the legendary forge” the harvester took his large scythe and pointed it in the direction he needed to go, then vanished just as quickly as he showed up. With a clear direction to go, he started heading that way with confidence, but the trials of the dungeon were still a threat to be wary off. The walls of the cavern started narrowing and then lead into a singular cave that went even further down into its depths. There was no other choice in paths so the courser lit his torch and went ahead and entered the cavern. After walking through the dark cavern he had come to a room that seemed ancient and the walls were crumbling down. There were some sections of the walls however that seemed to have a small circular opening every now and then, spread apart through the hall. He made sure to stay extra careful heading down the hallway, but on his first step, he seemed to step on a pressure plate, and then all of a sudden a few arrows went flying through the air, luckily catching the stallions shield instead of hitting him. He gulped, shaking a little as he slowly and carefully tried to walk through the hall without pressing another pressure place. But it seemed to prove more difficult than he was hoping as he hit another pressure plate, and once again the arrows came flying through the air. He was able to jump out of the way just in the nick of time, as it flew past him and stuck into the wall at the end of the tunnel. Eventually once he had made it to the end of the long hallway, he had hit a lever that seemed to deactivate the trapps, but in that moment at the end of the tunnel, a loud rolling sound could be heard. As Halbert watched, a giant boulder started rolling for him, and he turned around and started running for his life. As he ran he could see at the edge of his torchlight an outcropping for him to get into, so he jumped for it and landed, right in the nick of time as the giant boulder came rolling past him. Once he was safe, he went ahead and followed where the boulder went and made a turn down the next corridor. At the end of the tunnel seemed to be an ancient door, carvings all over it as it seemed to be locked shut for ages. Yet there was a small statue of a courser right in front of the door with its mouth open wide and slit going town into the statue. He went ahead to inspect it and noticed that it was in the shape of a sword blade that seemed like it could fit into it and then a lightbulb went off in the light brown stallion's head. He rummaged through his bag, and pulled out the rusty sword he had gotten a bit ago, and slid it into the spot and it seemed to fit like a glove. The whole statue and the door started glowing and the whole room started to shake as the door creaked open slowly, revealing what was inside. Once the door was done opening, he went ahead and pulled out the sword and waddled into the room. There was lava along the edges of the room, and a staircase that lead up to what seemed like to be a giant furnace. Halbert made his way up the stairs and looked as to what he needed to do next. There seemed to be a special indent in the metal of the furnace and he went ahead and placed the sword in its spot, and the whole furnace seemed to roar and awaken from its slumber. The rusty weapon had lava poured all over it and the machine pressed it up into the air and once it came back down, it seemed to be an entirely different weapon. At that moment, the dwarf appeared right before him, and bowed his head as his masterpiece had been restored, and he took the new weapon and disappeared, heading to the afterlife now that the thing that was tying him to this world had been completed. Once he was done, he went ahead and made his way back through the rooms with the deactivated traps, and back through the place where he had encountered the bat and right as he was about to leave, off in the distance. He could see this giant dark figure with a sunken face, hidden behind one of the lava falls. Halbert instantly recognized it from before and froze on the spot as like before a sense of dread came over him, and in a flash the figure disappeared before he could get a better look at what it was. Halbert didn’t know what that horrific creature was or wanted, but the next time he saw the harvester he was going to have a talk with him, to see what that creature was. After a hard night, he went ahead and traversed back to his house, making sure once again that he wasn’t being followed, and made it to his bed to fall asleep for the next adventure awaits.
The trials of the dungeon, and the dwarven furnace. - Halbert
One dwarven spirit appears to you from a blackened Soul Vine in the Earthen Furnace. They seem to wish to speak to you, but they can only moan two words before they disappear into steam again: The Forge? The Forge?
