Amongst the Flowers: Kamphire finds a Scythe
As I trotted back to Edos' camp I caught sight of a glimmering yellow flame in the midst of the forest. I turned in that direction and found myself passing through what felt like a portal. Before me was a tall cliff though the incline was gentle. I headed up to the top and looked below to what turned out to be a field filled with unnaturally large and glowing yellow flowers. They seemed to be emitting a similarly colored mist making the air shimmer.
I could smell them from here and it smelled like decay.
Suddenly there was the sound of battled. High pitched neighing, the clatter of weapons and the shouts of humans. I couldn't see anything but the noise increased the longer I stood here.
Is this some sort of old battle field I wondered?
Is it from the time before now where humans roamed?
Despite the scent and the unpleasant sounds I still decided to investigate.
I retraced my steps and went around the cliff this time and into the field. The vines creeping long the ground were thick and made it difficult to get forward. Now that I was eye level, I was able to see wisps of energy shaped like horses carrying knights whipping through the flowers, some attacking each other as if still engaging in the fierce battle although they had long been gone from this world.
So many questions swirled in my mind.
Did each of these flowers represent a fallen soul? if so the God of Battle had been greedy and had claimed thousands in this place.
The scent of death was heavy and I was feeling a bit light headed.
I finally came across some pumpkins, which seemed to the fruit of these strange flowers. They were large and healthy looking though thinking what was probably feeding them was a bit off-putting.
Having died once, death itself did not scare me.
I think that life is more terrifying. The betrayal of my vassal was worse than the cold embrace of death.
Awakening as a courser was ... the last thing I had ever expected. i though my soul would have returned to the embrace of the earth mother but instead I had been cast into another dimension and not even as a human. Was my devotion to her in vain?
I could hardly remember most of my life but the memories I had recovered showed me that I was faithful and devout to her. I deeply believed and is this what came of it?
I thought about Edos then... perhaps coming to know him was my reward.
For a complete stranger he was more true to me than any of my former peers. Even some of my family had never given me anything without looking for something in return.
While becoming a horse was... odd, perhaps it was far too soon to think that it was punishment...
I was free to do what my heart desired. I was no longer confined to a temple - I had reclaimed my destiny.
I looked around the field again and tried to see if there was anything extra unusual - after all of this was a bit crazy.
There was nothing to my eyes, but just in case I decided to investigate one of the strangely empty areas wondering what I could find there.
it took for longer to traverse than I expected.
You're brave, a disembodied voice chuckled.
I paused with one hoof int he air.
Don't stop now! the voice implored.
I continued on and when I reached the area of void, I saw a rusty scythe glinting on the bare stone.
As I was wondering about it, it suddenly took flight and came over to me. I was braced for an attack by none came.
"Accept me."
I heard disembodied voice in my mind.
"is that you talking?" I asked the scythe, after the pots I was prepared to talk to anything these days.
"It is me. Say it that you accept me out loud and i am yours."
I didn't hesitate. Edos had berated me after my last dungeon about taking a weapon with me and now here was one. I could ignore the fact it talked just because it was able to float. This would be the perfect weapon for my current form.
"I accept you," I said firmly.
There was a flash of light and a disturbing cackle and a moment later the scythe was floating next to me.
"Wield me with your energy...feed me"
Here we go again...I thought. Are all objects in this world starving??
Prompt: The yellow flowers that grow alongside the pumpkins on the Harvester’s Soul Vines tend to grow in strange patterns. On a ledge, you get a bird’s eye view of one such patch. Thousands of flowers bloom in squares, like soldiers in opposing battalions. Uneven scars of emptiness mar the field. At night, it is said, the entire valley resounds with the clatter of armor, screams of Coursers, and shouts in human language. Do you dare to visit the dead in the dark?
