[DD1] Pots and Plants

"Okay! Fresh start.. new beginning.. no more mistakes after this point."

Kanna's Light Orb weaved between being up front, leading the way and at Kanna's side. It's natural glow lighting up the dungeon to help prevent Kanna from having any more clumsy incidents. It was important to have better lighting now that he was too deep for anyone from the outside to come to his aid in a speedy manner. Eventually he would run into things worse than defensive flies and broken floors, and Kanna would like to not die in the dungeon, lost and forgotten, because of a sloppy mistake.

"..There is sooo much I want to do after all."

Kanna had decided to stay accompanied by his Light Orb, choosing to not dismiss it yet not just because of the additional light it provided but also because it allowed Kanna to have someone to talk to.

"I should have had you out from the start-- even though it would have been silly to have a wisp out during the day.. maybe you would have scared those pesky flies away and saw the unstable floor before I got trapped by it.. I'm really glad I got that Wizard to help me turn you into a magical summon. "

By getting the wisp bound to him with magic, Kanna could call it forth when and wherever he needed some extra light, or company, with a simple summon spell. When it wasn't summoned, the wisp lived in a lantern that he kept at home, which made it his magical pet now.

Even though the wisp could not use the same language as Kanna did, it didn't really have a physical body made for talking, he knew it could understand him regardless.  Given how it would not only coo and flicker softly in response to Kanna talking but understood and followed along when he gave it verbal directions and commands.

It was cooing in response to Kanna right now.

"I know that most adventurers actually die really easily because of the things they get into, in fact it probably cuts your life span in half compared to someone who is say.. a simple farmer.. Just think about how common it is to hear stories and rumors about an adventurer who did not come back home at all...."

The Light orb bobbed along, which Kanna took it as a sign of agreement, as if it were nodding along, as the pitch of their coo turned softer, mournful.

"Don't worry that's not going to happen to us, we're going to be extra careful and watch our step now."

Eventually Kanna passed through a hidden magic threshold that reacted with his Light Orb, the ancient magic reacting to the presence of the wisp, and the entire area around them lit up with the soft glow of magic runes.

"O-OH!--"

From these glowing runes wisps appeared, one after another in an assortment of pastel colors, and Kanna lowered his guard once the wisps began to follow a predetermined path rather than turning to attack him.

He breathed out a sigh of relief and Kanna could tell his Light Orb was curious to investigate the other wisps. It was mimicking the same rhythmic bobbing while the two of them both watched the wisps follow circler paths that had them threading back and forth through the walls.

"Fascinating.. I can't believe the magic in those runes was strong enough to react all these years later... and I guess now we know for sure that wisps have been used to light up areas without having to worry about causing a fire since ancient times, mystery solved.. and look-- now that we have more lighting, we can see the dungeon more.. and I think we'll go this way now."

As the two of them continued to travel deeper into the dungeon, Kanna could see how the dungeon changed around them with their path illuminated properly. From the walls to the floors, everything slowly shifted as he went deeper. The weathered and beaten cobblestone making way to smooth stone and decorative implements, the plants turning from overgrown mess to actual potted plants.

It was like they had stepped into an entirely different dungeon from the one they started with. Unlike the first area he had travelled through, this part of the dungeon could have comfortably housed someone, as the rooms he passed through had actual furniture in them. He didn't trust any of it to actually hold his weight, even if there was still magic present, the last thing he wanted to do was to get hurt after trying to lay down in a bed.

Kanna had only glanced back once to see how the wisps would dissipate after they went far enough away from them. It must have had something to do with the magic of his Light Orb no longer being able to resonate with the runes after a certain distance passed. He hoped that meant that the wisp were being dismissed back inside of the runes that they came from and not that they were disappearing for good.

"It looks so well preserved," Kanna eagerly examined the random decorations carved into the walls as he trotted by them,  "--nothing of note in the carvings..  something purely decorative so no point in stopping to examine further.. nothing hinting at a deeper purpose or rather a secretive purpose.. but I do see some beautiful depictions of ancient animals though. This is so exciting, we're definitely going to find treasure here."

It was only when they stumbled onto what appeared to be an abandoned garden of some sort that Kanna once again got lost in his excitement. His Light Orb echoed that sentiment by taking off into the depths of the room, it's distinct blue glow the only way that Kanna was able to keep track of them.

"--Be careful!!"

Kanna called out a warning even though he was confident that if anything should happen, the wisp would immediately come to warn him or at least return to his side at the hint of trouble.

Stepping into the room, Kanna took their time to observe his surroundings. As much as they eagerly wanted to follow after their Light Orb, they had to show the proper amount of caution themselves.

The first thing he noticed about the room was how overgrown the plants were. Once upon a time the various plants that had been kept in raised planters but the roots had grown so much that they had broken out the planters to reach down and break through the stone floor.

Before Kanna could examine one of the plants closer, nearly about to press his face against their leaves, a voice chimes in from the ground.

"Oi-- don't touch that one, it'll get stuck to you with the sap that it secretes."

"Ah?"

Kanna blinked in confusion at the plant before turning his gaze downwards, trying to figure out where the voice had come from.

"A talking pot...?"

"HEY-- There's not just one of us, If you look closely, we're actually a 'cluster' of pots."

"Yeah~~! A whole family even~~~!"

Kanna kneeled down to get a better look as he was too tall to make eye contract properly. He was met by a wave of agreements, and they weren't lying to him, they were actually a group of talking pots. There was about ten of them with matching clay lids; all of which seemed to be made out of the same clay judging the color and their only difference being that none of them shared the shape or size.

"I'm sorry I didn't notice you right away. I figured given the state of the plants.. weeell.. that everything had been abandoned for a while."

"No worries~~! Our little family is tucked away safe and sound~~!"

They were right, the pots seemed to have been tucked between the roots on purpose given the way they were underneath the planters, and if one of them hadn't spoken up, Kanna would have never noticed them at all.

"That's good to hear-- I would hate to see a family separated especially such a nice set of pots as yourselves."

Kanna kept his tone polite, hoping that his curiosity and urge to badger them with questions was well hidden, as he wanted to make a good impression. Figuring that this conversation with the pots would take a bit, Kanna sat down beside them and made himself comfortable. Thankfully, two of the pots had taken it upon themselves to be the ones to talk to Kanna because it would have been a nightmare for him to follow along if all of them tried to talk to him at once.

"HMPH-- Not like we get much troublemakers around here, it's usually pretty quiet."

"Yeah~~! It's just our family in this garden right now~~! The plants do make good quiet neighbors~~! Too bad we're on our own now~~!"

"HAH-- Our former master, a Wizard, used to explore the dungeon, took us with it every time onna' count of how we can carry stuff for it but it ended up leaving us behind in this garden one day and just never came back."

"We don't even know how much time as past since~~! It's been soooooooooo long~~!"

"--and It just left you here.. in the dungeon.  Like It just left behind a bunch of sentient pots. There has to have been a reason why it left you all behind-- I could understand one or two, but all of you?? It doesn't make any sense."

The disbelief was clear in Kanna's voice. It didn't make any sense to them as they could not find any logical reason for a Wizard to make that decision. Something surely must have prompted it, and given that he had just met these pots, Kanna was a reluctant to believe that they were telling the entire story.

While Kanna was preoccupied with the pots, his Light Orb had drifted back to his side, safe and sound. Its glow dimming to a soft and warm shade of blue, signaling they were content and that there was no reason to be alarmed.  Since it kept hovering over him, Kanna figured it had finished exploring for now so he gave it a flick of an ear to acknowledge that he saw they joined back up with him.

"YEAH-- It was strange, it's not like we've done anything wrong, followed orders and did our job."

"Remember the contents~~! Say the reminder notes when asked~~! Keep the insides safe and clean~~!"

The rest of the pots nodded along with those two, agreeing with the statements, and even without them having eyes, Kanna could feel their sad and lost gazes being directed at him.

"Weeeell, maybe something happened to it and it couldn't come back for you...OR ahahahah maybe it just forgot,  you know some wizards are really old and uhhhhh kinda' l...ose it after a while... or you know maybe it is just busy and the time got away from them.. ah.. hahaha.."

Kanna let out a nervous chuckle, worried that he may have accidentally put bad thoughts into the pots' head now and the last thing he wanted to was commit a faux pas

"NAH-- Our Master is old as balls and probably can't even die, but it's not like it left us in a bad place."

"We have shelter~~! and we have each other~~! but if you could help us~~!"

"YEAH-- As much as it's fun hanging around here with the fam', I think we're all ready to move on, plus we're kinda' hungry."

"Pots need to eat--- not important, yeah I can help you out... I can take you with me in my bag, there's lots of room.. but.. I need to know.. how do I uh... feed you?"

The pots all let out a cheer and vibrated in excitement; Kanna winced a little when they started to hit each other accidentally. He did not feel like bringing up, he was already trying to process how pots felt hunger, a sign of their sentience perhaps?

"Thank you for the help~~! The plants are actually an ancient type of animal feed~~! Not really tasty to most but for magical creatures such our selves~~!"

"WOO-- tastes like chicken or that's what the Master would say, anyway, just pluck the leaves and drop them inside of our mouths."

"The more you fill us with~~! The less we will need in the future~~! That way you can continue to explore~~!"

With those two last statements, the pots began to pop off their lids and waited for Kanna to feed them. They all continued to vibrated with excitement and suppressed the urge to sigh, but he did give his Light Orb a look.

"I hope you don't mind helping me gather these leaves, we're going to be at this for a while.. I'll tear them off and you carrying them to the pots? Even if it's just one at a time, I can just focus on collecting enough leaves with a little extra for myself to take back."

You enter a chamber in search of treasure, but find only a pile of clay pots. You’re about to turn away when they come alive, their lids yammering like mouths. They complain of the Wizard’s negligence, and that c’mon, they’re starving here. Do you give them an offering?

x-x this took me a week to write, i am so sorry.
