“You’re stuck.” 

Britney’s unhelpful observations had really begun to grate on Merewing’s perpetually thin nerves. It was entirely impossible for the Courser not to notice their hoove wedged firmly between two protruding stones. Earlier, Britney had called Merewing’s attention to the hanging ivy the pair had been actively walking through at the time. It was as if their interaction with the bizarre blind Courser weeks before had led Britney to assume they were blind, too. 

Merewing grunted a reply, gritting their teeth. Being stuck was the least of their worries, really, and their aching muscles actually enjoyed the brief respite- They had been exploring this particular wing of the dungeons for the last day and had found little reason to stop. 

“Are you going to get unstuck?” 

By the storms, what had gotten into her? Merewing craned their neck, glaring at the pygmy drake atop their withers. She shrank back from their gaze, a frown on her scaly face. “I’m sorry! I’m just tired, Merewing. We’ve been going nonstop for weeks.” 

Had it been that long? Merewing hadn’t noticed. They often found themselves lost in their own mind, and time passed in heartbeats. 

They softened their gaze, and Britney heaved a sigh, a plume of smoke escaping her nostrils. “It’s alright. How about we just take a day to rest? I’ll get you unstuck if you say yes.” 

Amusement curled the corners of Merewing’s mouth. They couldn’t stay annoyed at their talkative companion for long. After nodding their agreement, Britney scrambled down and began chipping away at the stones that held Merewing’s hoof. 

Before long, she had freed them, and they lay curled protectively curled around the warm drake. Perhaps she was right, as she always was.
