[DD2] Furnace of Heat
The heat was suffocating, pressing down on Levi like a heavy, molten blanket. Even before he stepped into the furnace chamber, the rising temperature had been relentless, growing in intensity the deeper he ventured into this part of the dungeon. Now, standing at the threshold of what could only be described as a massive inferno, he could feel the moisture being sucked from his coat, the air around him shimmering with heatwaves. Every breath felt like inhaling fire.
Levi had known that this would be one of the more challenging parts of the dungeon—he’d been warned repeatedly by other Coursers who had ventured here and returned singed and exhausted. The furnace was infamous among explorers, and it wasn’t just the physical dangers it presented. The heat had a way of playing tricks on the mind, warping perception and pushing even the strongest-willed adventurers to the edge. There were stories of Coursers who had lost themselves here, consumed by the sweltering heat and their own desperation to escape it.
But Levi wasn’t one to be caught unprepared.
As he stood there, surveying the glowing walls and the red-hot veins of magma that snaked across the chamber like the lifeblood of the dungeon itself, he could feel the heat pressing against his defenses. Fortunately, those defenses had been carefully planned, chosen for their reliability and, most importantly, their ability to withstand the oppressive furnace conditions.
Levi reached back to the packs he had carefully slung across his flanks before beginning this leg of his journey. The first of his defenses was a special cloak, one imbued with a magical cooling enchantment. The fabric, though lightweight and unassuming, had been designed by skilled enchanters specifically for situations like this. He had acquired it from a surface trader who specialized in dungeon gear, and though it had cost him a fair share of his spoils, it had been worth every bit.
The cloak draped loosely over his back, but the moment Levi activated the enchantment by pressing his hoof against the small rune embedded in the fabric, a faint glow surrounded him. The heat became immediately more bearable, as if an invisible barrier had formed between him and the furnace's sweltering air. He could still feel the warmth, but it was manageable, like standing by a hearth instead of being thrust into the heart of a raging inferno.
With the cloak doing its job, Levi allowed himself a brief moment to take in his surroundings more thoroughly. The chamber was immense, easily the size of a grand hall, with molten rivers flowing beneath the cracked and crumbling stone floor. Massive pillars of basalt jutted up from the ground, some glowing red with heat, others charred black from centuries of exposure to the fiery environment. In the center of the room, a particularly large magma pool bubbled ominously, casting a dim, hellish light over everything.
It wasn’t just the heat that made this part of the dungeon so dangerous; the environment itself seemed alive, shifting and unstable. The air was filled with the sound of cracking stone, the occasional eruption of steam, and the constant, low rumble of magma flowing just beneath the surface. Levi knew better than to stand still for too long—any moment, the ground beneath his hooves could give way, or a sudden eruption of fire could catch him off guard.
Carefully, he began to make his way deeper into the chamber, his hoofsteps deliberate and measured. The cooling cloak was working wonders, but even with it, the heat still seeped through in waves, reminding him just how dangerous this place truly was.
That’s when he reached for the second item in his arsenal.
Levi had brought along several small vials of a cooling potion, another expensive but invaluable purchase. He had tested it on earlier dungeon dives, though never in an environment this extreme. The potion, when ingested, created a cooling sensation that spread throughout the body, effectively lowering his internal temperature for a period of time. It wasn’t a permanent solution, but it would give him an edge if the heat became overwhelming.
Levi uncorked one of the vials with his teeth and tipped it back, swallowing the cool liquid in one smooth motion. Immediately, he felt a refreshing chill spread from his core, radiating out to his extremities. His muscles, which had begun to tense from the relentless heat, relaxed slightly, and his mind felt clearer, sharper. The heat was still there, but it was no longer suffocating him, no longer threatening to break his focus.
He pressed on, his eyes scanning the chamber for any signs of the artifact he was seeking. According to the old maps and lore, something of great value was hidden in the furnace—a relic that had been lost to time, rumored to hold immense power. But the furnace didn’t give up its secrets easily, and Levi knew he would have to dig deeper, both literally and figuratively, to uncover the truth.
As he moved, Levi remained hyper-aware of the ever-shifting environment. The floor was treacherous, with cracks that could give way at any moment, and he had to be careful not to linger too long in one spot. The cooling cloak was helping to keep him safe from the worst of the heat, but even it couldn’t protect him from the unstable ground beneath his hooves.
Then, without warning, a geyser of steam erupted from the floor just a few paces ahead of him. Levi reacted instantly, leaping to the side as the scalding steam shot upward, narrowly missing him. He landed on a more stable patch of stone, his heart racing but his mind focused. The dungeon was testing him, pushing him to see if he was truly prepared for the challenges ahead.
But Levi was no stranger to such tests.
He reached for the third item he had brought along—a small enchanted gemstone, cool to the touch despite the sweltering heat surrounding him. The gem, known as an "iceheart," had been given to him by an old Courser who had long since retired from dungeon diving. It was said to possess a fragment of the essence of winter itself, capable of creating a brief but powerful burst of cold in even the hottest environments.
Levi held the iceheart in his mouth, feeling its cool energy seep into his body as he continued to navigate the treacherous chamber. The gemstone couldn’t cool the entire room, but it provided him with a momentary reprieve from the heat, giving him the strength he needed to keep moving forward.
As he approached the center of the chamber, where the largest magma pool bubbled and churned, Levi noticed something strange. The air around the pool seemed to shimmer more intensely, as if something was distorting the heat, bending it in ways that defied explanation. The magma itself seemed to pulse with a rhythm, slow and steady, like the beating of a heart.
Levi’s instincts told him that whatever he was looking for was here, somewhere beneath the surface of the molten rock. But how could he retrieve it without succumbing to the heat? Even with his preparations, he couldn’t dive into the magma itself—that would be suicide.
He circled the pool cautiously, his mind racing as he considered his options. Then, as if in answer to his unspoken question, he noticed a faint glow emanating from a crack in the ground near the edge of the pool. It was different from the red glow of the magma—paler, cooler, almost ethereal.
Curious, Levi approached the crack and peered inside. There, nestled in the rock, was a small, crystalline object, glowing with an icy blue light. It looked like a shard of ice, impossibly cold and untouched by the surrounding heat.
The relic.
Levi knew he had found what he had come for, but retrieving it wouldn’t be easy. The heat was still oppressive, and the ground around the crack was unstable. One wrong move, and he could find himself trapped in the magma pool.
But Levi wasn’t one to back down from a challenge. He had prepared for this, and he wasn’t about to let the dungeon win.
Taking a deep breath, Levi activated the iceheart once more, feeling its cool energy flow through him. With a swift, practiced motion, he reached into the crack with his hoof and carefully extracted the relic, its cold surface sending a shock through his system.
The moment he had it in his grasp, the heat around him seemed to intensify, as if the dungeon itself was angry at his success. But Levi didn’t hesitate. He turned and bolted from the chamber, his hooves pounding against the stone as the furnace raged behind him.
With the relic secured and his body still protected by his enchanted items, Levi knew that he had won this round. But the dungeon was far from finished with him. There were more dangers ahead, more challenges to face.
And Levi would be ready for them.
