Ellie assures me that today marks the tenth day of this descent, and I’m not sure if I got mixed up in my preparation or if I ate too much on previous days, but I am running low on rations.

While it would be wise to head back up to the surface in these circumstances –and I was on my way to do so– I can’t help but think the structure we came across this morning needs more of my attention. Leaving now when I haven’t even finished sketching the possible floor plan would be failing my obligations as Head Archivist.

From what I can already assess so far, I think my initial guess of this being a chapel might be wrong. The masonry seems too practical, not enough ornaments or sculpted reliefs. No matter its initial purpose, one thing is for certain: this structure is ancient. From the nature and wear of the stone, I would perhaps place its construction around the time of the Great War, if not before that. Specialists of the time period could probably tell more, but that’s a start.

Ellie is now truly pestering me about getting a move on as I’m writing this. How am I supposed to leave such a find behind without properly investigating it? I know I could mark down its location and come back later, with a team of specialised archeologists even, but where’s the fun in that? The initial discovery, the first notes on paper, the theories… That will always be what I prefer in this line of work.
