[DD3] To Be Bitten, To Bite in Return
"What's up with this creepy symbol we keep seein' all over the place. Starting to get on my nerves." Terrence grumbled, kicking a piece of metal towards Janus' hooves. The other courser stopped when the metal stopped in the grass in front of him, looking over the symbol and making a small noise of thought.
Janus couldn't care less about the magical sigil behind the main focus of the symbol. All of his thoughts were caused by the dramatic and violent interaction between the two coursers. Biting at each others necks, yet without any emotion or feeling in their carved eyes.
He could only imagine it- the feeling of a ravenous bite to the neck while biting down on another, the feeling of an action meant to maim, of being a victim and a threat at the same time. What desperate thoughts could have caused this to be the symbol used on so much armor, so many signs, so many tools? A war without meaning, perhaps? Something so violent and heartbreaking, treated as nothing more than a daily occurance that would never change.
Could it be a war among themselves? Is that why the courser heads looked so similar? Two sides of the same people, fighting and killing the very core of what makes both of them alive. Perhaps that was him projecting just a tad... but art was about interpretation.
"Janus." Terrence turned once he noticed that the courser behind him had stopped moving. He watched for a moment as the other stared blankly at the piece of metal on the ground. He gave him a few minutes, even if Terrence's worry had started much sooner than that.
"Janus." He repeated, a little louder. Still, Janus stayed still, lost in his thoughts about the symbol. Terrence entertained the idea that something involving the symbol had trapped Janus' mind, like some kind of curse. It was entirely possible, considering everything else that happened in the dungeon.
That thought was enough to make him rush over, putting his hoof over the metal and yelling once again, this time directly in Janus' expressionless face. "JANUS!"
Silver and Bronze eyes snapped upwards to meet Terrence's pink. "Huh!?" Janus let out the noise with a small shuffling of hooves, backing up from the black courser and blinking a few times. "How long was I-?" He asked, stopping just before the next words, mostly because he wasn't entirely sure what he had been doing.
Terrence sighed. "After I noticed you had stopped dead in your tracks? About ten-or-so moments, if I had to make a guess. What about this piece of junk got you trapped like that?" He watched as Janus' gaze turned away from him. He had planned for his voice to sound more concerned than judgemental, but Terrence admittedly was quite bad at dropping his brash persona, even when it was neccessary. Janus didn't seem to affected, gracing Terrence with an answer.
"I kept seeing it everywhere. I wanted to get a better look at it, got lost in thought it seems." He stated simply, trying not to look down at it again. Before he could let his desires get the better of him, Terrence picked up the metal scrap and put it into Janus' bag, nodding once. "Well, at least you weren't under some spell or whatever. If you see something interesting like that again, just bag it and go next time, okay?"
Janus nodded. "Right. Sorry." Despite how short it was, Terrence could tell that it was from a mix of embarassment and genuine guilt for making him worry. Janus was a lot like Terrence in some ways, with the whole 'softer than you'd expect under the brashness and ego' thing. It made him even more soft-hearted when he lightly put a hoof on Janus' shoulder, causing the other courser to look up at him.
"Don't worry about it, man. Happens a bunch down here. How about you tell me about all those thoughts you had about that symbol. It might lead us to something good in the future."
Terrence's words were genuine, he really wanted to hear Janus' thoughts. Janus didn't deny his thoughts from him either. The two continuing on their way as they discussed Janus' thoughts and theories.
Both of them would end up promising never to share what happened down here with anyone else- be that how Janus stared at a piece of metal for long enough for Terrence to question his sanity, the way both of them acted like scholars discussing said piece of metal, or the way that Terrence comforted Janus as if they were siblings.
Much of the regalia you find torn and bloodied across the battlefield bears the same sigil – a pentacle with two Coursers’ heads laid over it, each appearing to bite the other in the neck. What do you make of this odd symbol?
