[DD2] Near Miss
Cloven hooves frantically find purchase amongst burning bricks as Paradiso runs after Fetch, the unnatural barking that echoes around them only serving to up her panic even further. Her mind raced with thoughts of death and demise, horrified that perhaps the figure they'd encountered earlier had truly been the avatar of the end itself come to deliver such an ill omen.
"Paradiso."
Fetch calls from before her, their singular word cutting through her thoughts like a knife. Snapped back to reality, she reponds, voice clearly harrowed. "Wh- what?"
"Follow me like your life depends on it."
It- didn't it already? Paradiso gawks at the Courser galloping in front of her, but by this point has learned to not question them too much- at least, not openly. One can easily imagine that in her own brain, she was certainly screaming "WHY?" and other such variations on repeat. As the howling draws nearer, Fetch takes a sudden turn, so quick in fact that Paradiso herself nearly loses her balance in an attempt to follow just as swiftly. They lead her to the edge of the road, bricks jutting out across the lava below.
"Oh- oh no. Surely you don't intend for us to-" She cuts herself off when she realizes that yes, that is exactly what her guide seems to have in mind. Paradiso watches in absolute horror as they gallop directly towards the very edge, taking a flying leap off and making it safely to a makeshift island of bricks in the midst of the molten rock. With practiced ease, they leap from "stepping stone" to "stepping stone". How Paradiso wishes she had the amount of experience to be just as certain as they were.
Faced with no other option, she sends a prayer to the heavens and sends herself flying over the edge, trying desperately to prevent herself from closing her eyes out of sheer fright. She lands with a thump on the pile of bricks, hooves scrabbling for purchase as she sends a few of them into the lava mere inches from the Courser herself. She barely suppresses the horrified yelp that threatens to escape her. Ah, death was ever so close.
When she does finally make it across, Fetch is looking at her with that odd gaze. It always felt like they could see things about herself that she couldn't an uncanniness the blue mare just cannot shake off.
"You did well."
"...Thank you?"
Paradiso isn't left much more time to process that odd compliment, before her guide once more rushes off. Not wanting to be left behind, she follows suit with a haste that she feels she'll need to keep up so long as she travels with them.
