[DD1] whispers
Sydney trod along a narrow stone corridor, his lantern swinging around his neck. It was very quiet - until it wasn’t. He paused as a stray whisper caught his ear - was there someone else in this corridor with him?
“Hello?” He called out. “Who’s there?”
No response. He continued along for a few steps, and then there it was again - someone, or something, whispering to him. He couldn’t tell what the whispers said, but they sounded distinctly like whispering. He snorted with frustration, feeling a twinge of anxiety.
“If someone’s there, say something louder!”
Only more whispering.
Maybe, he thought, it was something else. A stream of water trickling or something. That thought comforted him for a moment, but that comfort soon went away as the whispering continued. It didn’t sound like water trickling, it sounded like voices. He walked faster, hoping to find a bigger cavern that he could gather his thoughts in - right now this narrow passageway felt like it was closing in on him and the whispering voices seemed to be growing louder and more numerous. Soon he was trotting, moving as swiftly as these tight corridors would allow, until eventually the cavern opened up into a bigger room and he stopped, breathing heavily.
The whispers had ceased. Sydney sighed with relief, shaking his mane. That, hopefully, was the end of that.
prompt: Indistinguishable whispers are bouncing off the walls of the cavern. However your mind tries to rationalize what you're hearing, you can't deny that they sound real. How do you react?
