Augury stilled at the threshold to the next chamber, only the slightest of movements under the glazed eyes giving away that he was not entirely frozen in place. But perhaps it was just the reflection of the low torchlight, rather than any indication of life.

The room was blanketed from floor to ceiling in darkly veined fungi. Nearly every inch of stone covered, but Augury watched carefully, not enough to spot the different texture peeking through the moss and lichen. Dully capped mushrooms sprouted haphazardly.

He considered, for a moment, returning the way he had come to search for an alternate avenue forward. The crow on his back, as yet unnamed beyond the descriptive, cocked its head, peering dark eyes at the room. It cawed once, a sound that echoed… and Augury stepped inside.

Under his hooves, light bloomed, spreading outward in a ripple from where he stepped. It bounced up the walls of the chambers, echoing through the interconnected weave of fungi.

A vibrant blue, it reflected off Augury’s eyes in a way the dim flame did not.

The luminescence continued to flare with each step Augury took further into the chamber, until it was light up near-constantly. The light almost too harsh, too much.

Crow cawed again.

Ahead, the blinding light blurred into a shape, a glowing blue, mound of fungi in the shape of a Courser.

Augury tilted his head, the shape tilted back, a tail of bright lichen flicking slowly behind it. The mirror was not yet perfect then… which posed a concern. If the mirror was not a mirror, then it was a mind of its own.

Moving around it in a slow circle, Augury shifted to set his back to the exit, keeping the creature ahead of him. It followed, trying to arch its neck in the same way, to follow the slow sway of his head. It did not quite succeed.

Walking backward, Augury closed the distance to the exit. But the creature was walking faster forward than he was behind. The gap between Courser and Not Courser shrinking minutely with every step. Augury could see red among the blue, where the whites of eyes should have been.

Spinning on his heel, Augury turned and galloped toward the exit. The horrific slide and schick of the creature rushing to follow him, sucking up its fellows from the floor to gain speed, using them to drag itself forward.

Augury crested the threshold, the loud click of hooves again on stone echoing.

Crow cawed, and the door closed.

You’ve heard that the dungeon’s fungi are connected to one another in a system resembling a brain, even resulting in something like intelligence. You experience this for yourself when a fungal growth in the shape of a Courser meets you at the end of a tunnel – but not just any Courser. You. It seems to be mirroring your movements. How do you proceed?
