[DD1] the apple
White.
The tree is white.
Down here, sunless, forgotten, it has lost all its colour to the ground beneath it, leeched away into leaf-coloured moss and bark-coloured stone. Blodwen, born of clay and the magic of the dungeon with her sisters, has never heard of such a tree. If any courser ought to know, it would be the sisters. The walls here are quiet, though. Damp. Dampening. Keeping their secret from the rest of the whispering stone and gossiping ferns.
Count Blodwen intrigued.
She approaches, because the white leaves shiver her forward. Her sisters, ever nearby, are two shadows behind her, green and blue.
Nestled in the pallid roots is a fruit. An apple. This, too, colourless. Sapped. Clear flesh gives way to precious black seeds. Hope encased in glass.
Blodwen does not consult her sisters because she does not need to.
She puts the apple in her bag, careful not to pierce the skin with her short young teeth.
The sisters will plant the tree's child on the surface, where it may see the sun again.
In a particularly vast chamber, you come across a lone tree whose roots reach claw-like into the stone. It is the only tree you’ve ever seen in the caverns. Though you haven't felt a breeze since venturing underground, the tree’s branches sway and creak above you. You feel compelled to do something… But what?
- Blodwen takes a fruit.
