[DD3] Pancake is witness to a phantom of the past

Two horses trotted across the moor, the damp grass crushing beneath them hooves. It was silent. In the distance dead trees branched out, gravestones lying in their shade. A bay Courser, Pancake, was at the front, carrying a torch in her mouth. Behind her was Logue, a tall, brindle stallion. He carried the treasure map Pancake had brought with her.

“That’s a mighty cute cat you have there,”

Pancake glanced over his shoulder. His orange tabby cat was sitting on top of her back, staring at Logue with wide green eyes. She made a cute, Mrrrow! Sound once he acknowledged her.

“Oh! That's Miss Buttermilk, she likes to stare sometimes.” Pancake hummed, turning back forward. He’s been a bit quiet on his first dive… there was a lot to take in, afterall! It was the first time Pancake had entered the Moor of Sleep. Regardless, she was glad to have Logue guide her through it.

“At mah old home–we had cats that would wander the tall grass, catching lil’ field mice.” Logue said with a slight smile,”Does Miss Buttermilk catch her own food? She looks… well, a little endowed in the stomach there!” The champagne Courser chuckled. Miss Buttermilk narrowed her eyes, as if she understood, slipping back into one of Pancake’s satchels.

Pancake snickered at the comment,”Miss Buttermilk catches her own food! She's a skilled hunter, too! She’s just got a lot of fluff down there..” He cheekily defended his cat. Pancake was aware that Miss Buttermilk might be heavier than the average cat, but she wore it well! In fact, Pancake thought it made her even cuter.

The two came to a sudden stop as a cold wind blew over there, a ghastly howl following in its wake. Pancake’s ears pricked up, looking in the direction of the wind. He pinned his ears back down at the sight before him.

A spectral Courser… marching aimlessly across the moor in the distance. It wore rusted armor, which rustled with each of its movements. While on its back was a… humanoid figure? She turned towards Logue, who started to lower himself to the ground, his brindle blending in with the tall blades of grass. He placed the treasure map down to get another look at it. After a moment, he looked back up towards Pancake, his light, green eyes meeting her own.

“‘Ah don’t know much about humans besides what ‘ah hear from other dungeoneers…” He began, taking another look at the distant specter. “But ‘ah do know that a great war once ravaged these moorlands… sometimes these wandering phantoms are just echoes of the past… other times they’ve taken a physical form with an undyin’ sense of bloodlust.”

He glanced back up at Pancake,”It’s best to lie low until they’ve dissipated, they won’t linger as long as they’re unbothered.”

Pancake gave a little huff in response, beginning to kneel into the grass. Still. her dark brown eyes were wide with wonder as she watched the haunting specter.

"As you make your way across the Moor, you encounter a spectral Courser wandering aimlessly, its armor aged and torn. A second, human specter – or perhaps an extension of the same spirit – straddles the Courser’s back for some reason. They don’t seem to threaten you, but it’s unclear what would happen if they were to see you…"
