[DD2] Preparations of a loner

Even as a courser - swift and powerful, he cannot rely solely on his natural instincts to keep himself safe. Over the years, Alabaster picked up several things he brings and does to keep himself in the best shape to safely traverse the dungeons and its inhabitants.

When he started out dungeoning, he burned himself by taking too much gear with him. He brought armour which weighted him down and had made traversal hard. Nowadays, he solely relies on the lightweight armour he has on his front legs made from hardened leather. Experience has taught him he cannot sacrifice any speed, it didn't fit his way of fighting and exploring.

For a time, he used to go out of his comfort zone and leave the dungeons more often, visiting the local villages where he got himself iron hoof covers fitted. While they were practical during fights, they encumbered him more and more as the day got longer. He shed them soon enough, made some coin off of them and hasn’t tried them again since.

Something which is the heart and soul of his equipment is his bags. At times, the space inside them seemed endless. Waterskin, rations, maps, notes, herbs and anything he could possibly need fit snugly inside the bags and lay at his sides attached with leather straps. They don’t hinder his movement and provide protection from small impact attacks. An allrounder he wouldn’t want to miss.

While he doesn’t think of himself as an overly sentimental person, there’s one thing he can’t help but keep close to him, hidden beneath his scarf. A scar he acquired when he was still a young colt, long and branching. He’s had it for most of his life, and it reminds him of better times, and while he wouldn’t trade his way of living for anything, it keeps him going in hard moments.

Experience is a good teacher, being a courser also helps to always be aware of one’s surroundings. After many years in the dungeouns Alabaster had developed a strong situational awareness and active sense of danger, thereby keeping alert without anxiety and calm under pressure.

Alabaster also had developed certain ticks he simply does without noticing, like pawing the ground when in thought. While not actively helping with keeping him safe, they unconsciously relax and distress him, helping him stay focused longer.

By combining all of this - gear, tools and mental fortitude, he felt confident to face the dangers of adventuring.

Safety is only an illusion, even then it’s one he crafts every day.

Prompt: Safety may be an illusion, but it is one a Courser must maintain to live the life of an adventurer. What do you do (or bring along) to help bolster your spirits and make you feel protected?
