[DD3] un-crows (resubmission)
“Are those really crows?” Kendall asked after a while of walking in silence. The creatures that perched on the myriad bones strewn about the moors were certainly small, dark, and vaguely crow-shaped. But could a population of crows really live down here? The bones in question were just that - bones. There had long been nothing left on them for carrion-eaters to pick at. It seemed a little suspicious to Kendall.
“...Are those really crows?” Fetch merely repeated after a moment’s delay. But then, to Kendall’s surprise, she continued speaking:
“Are crows really crows? Who knows?” She said, and then repeated it a few more times under her breath, while Kendall continued to stare thoughtfully at a gathered flock of the crowlike creatures.
“I’m going to see if I can get a closer look.” He announced, trotting away before finding out if Fetch was going to stop him.
He approached slowly, trying his best not to startle the creatures, and as he got closer he found himself suddenly unnerved by how eerily still they were, perched on the ribcage of a long dead courser that jutted out of the ground. They did not caw or ruffle their feathers. They did not even turn their heads to look around. They simply stood and stared off into the distance, each looking in a slightly different direction. It almost seemed wrong to consider disturbing their concentration.
It quickly became clear to Kendall as he got closer that these things were not crows. They were very like crows, but the thing about crows - living ones, anyways - was that they did not typically have fully exposed skulls.
When Kendall was close enough to see this, he let out a whinny of fright, which immediately made all the un-crows turn their eerie skulls towards him. But they did not move. They only stared, with empty eye sockets.
Kendall, finding himself filled with a deep sense of dread, turned and ran back to the side of Fetch, who had stopped to wait for him. Fetch, for her part, said nothing, but gave him a curious look. He just shook his head.
“Not crows.”
But as the two of them began to move on, Kendall found himself looking over his shoulder at where the crows were still perched, all still staring at the place where he’d been as though he were still there. In spite of himself he was fascinated by the creatures, and wondered what they could possibly be seeing when they stared like that.
“What do you suppose they’re looking at?” He asked to Fetch, glancing forwards, and then back over his shoulder again. Fetch shrugged.
“Ones without eyes see without sight.” She answered after a moment of thought.
Kendall looked at her again.
“Huh.”
prompt: Every bone half-buried on the battlefield was picked clean long ago, but still, crows land on them. At least… They look like crows from afar. Do you get closer? What do you see?
