Is this your first time in the dungeon, or are you a veteran of the Courser’s calling? When and why did you decide to answer the call of the depths?

As Romeo continued to scoot and squeeze along the narrow pathway, he couldn’t help but to reflect on how in the world he ended up here.

He had primarily lived atop the surface for most of his life, rarely even visiting the various entrances to the Buried Kingdom near his village – aside to occasionally laugh at the coursers foolish enough to enter. He had no desire to enter himself; he had seen the state of some of his neighbours upon their return from the depths, and the fact that some never even returned at all…

However, circumstances required a change. His mother was ageing, and despite his hard work as a labourer above ground, being able to look after her and make ends meet was becoming a challenge. And the years of goading from others about his distaste for the dungeons, and how his father had been a proud and brave adventurer, Romeo has decided now was the time to embrace his heritage.

How can anyone be proud of doing this, he thought to himself, as the passageway ceiling forced him to crawl along practically on his belly for a further few yards. Most undignified.

But his pride of making sure his mother was taken care of, to pay back the neighbours keeping an eye on her whilst he was here, doing this, that was enough to steel his determination to continue. He had survived til now dealing with the questions of why he wasn’t following in his father’s footsteps, but that was an afterthought to him – he knew he had to look after her, and the promises of riches untold to those who entered the Buried Kingdom was enough encouragement for him to put his best hoof forward.
