Mitigation had a good thing going on the surface, there really was no need to go down to the dungeons. They had a safe life, with people that they cared about and who cared for them in turn. They were even on the path to dedicating themselves to a beloved friend of theirs and working towards a beautiful family.

So what could have caused a courser who seemingly had their life together to abandon it all?

It wasn't money, for they weren't hurting for coin in their previous life, enough to care for themself and a future family. It wasn't for praise, Mitigation didn't need to be praised in order to feel as if they had done well. It certainly wasn't treasure. They were one of those 'the best treasure of all is the connections we make' types, not very good for convincing to move their life around for a few trinkets.

No, what really got them to become a dungeoneer was a search for purpose. Some may be content with their purpose in life being that of a parent, or a farmer, or whatever career they hold up on the surface. Mitigation too once thought that the life of a parent and farmer would be just fine for them... until the call echoed through their core.

It made them realize that they wanted greatness in their life. It had all been so... normal. So uninteresting. They would never be remembered once they passed, and if they would, they would only be remembered as one of the masses. An ambiguous number among many other coursers with the same dull life that they lead.

And so, here they were. With a name no longer like their old one, and their past completely removed from them in any way that mattered.

How would they know they have found a greater purpose? It was still unclear, but Mitigation knew what it would feel like to find it. Joy beyond their comprehension, freedom that fills their chest, and the knowledge that their name would be written in history. Not as an unknown farmer from the surface, but as a great dungeoneer, and perhaps even one of the few that could one day meet the most terrifying monsters and live to tell the tale.

But, one must take foal's steps before becoming a great hero. For Mitigation, this small first step was getting used to the feeling of moss under their hooves.
