Kendall paced in a circle around the impossible thing, examining it closely, his eyes wide with wonder. Fetch’s eyes were also wide, but she was standing still, staring directly into the brazier’s flames as though hypnotized by the sight. Kendall paused his pacing, looking up at her.

“It’s amazing, isn’t it?”

“...It’s amazing, isn’t it?” Fetch repeated softly after a brief pause. 

“Have you ever seen anything like it?” Kendall pressed, his tail twitching with excitement. Fetch only blinked, and Kendall opened his mouth to speak again before she finally answered:

“Chill is warmth to spirits.” 

“...Is that so?” Kendall looked back over his shoulder at the brazier. “Do you think it’s the brazier that is enchanted, or the coals?”

“Or the coals?” Fetch repeated after him again. Kendall nodded. 

“Let’s try to take one, then. It could be useful later, if we run into any spirits, like you said.” 

He trotted back up to the brazier and, hesitantly, reached a hoof into the flames. They were cold - colder than anything Kendall had ever felt before. His whole body shivered as he carefully scraped one of the coals out of the brazier and onto the ground, where it continued to shimmer for a moment with cold flame. He leaned down and blew it out, then picked up the coal in his mouth - it was like handling a block of ice, and it made his teeth hurt. He dropped the coal into one of his bags, and let out a final big shiver.

Fetch watched this whole affair unblinkingly. If she was uncertain as to the wisdom of this course of action, she didn’t let it show. Kendall triumphantly flourished his tail.

“Let’s keep moving, then.”

“Let’s keep moving, then.” Fetch repeated with a nod.
