[MEDIUM] Death Profiteers

"But what is it?"

Dahlia stood before the gaping, empty eye socket of a massive unknown thing. For a second they all thought the thing might come to life, as so many Courser skeletons had done in shallower chambers, but after an extended pause of tight-held breath they heard... nothing. The skeleton did not twitch, did not glow. This one, it seemed, was precisely what it appeared to be. An ancient beast slain by the strike of a single massive blade to the brow. Daybreak suspected they should all consider themselves lucky. They weren't equipped to fight such a thing still living.

"Does it matter?" Aizere, Daybreak had learned, had little patience for the nature of the dungeons. He had come here for but a single purpose. Treasure. In that, the merchent was not at all unusual. Many delvers got their start thinking only of some greater fortune.

Delvers of the sort that Daybreak did not trust.

"Let's just hope it was the only one down here," Daybreak stepped up to the massive skull and leaned in to brush their muzzle to the old bones. It did appear to be just that-- bone. Not crystal, not crumbling ash. Daybreak rarely found anything of a simple origin in this place, but it did happen occasionally. Behind him, Cyneric snorted in quiet agreement. The princeling had more courage than he really deserved, but even he wanted nothing to do with proving himself against a beast so massive.

"I think we can get this out," Aizere interrupted a beast of silence, having listened to not a single word Daybreak said. As was his way. Daybreak heaved a sigh and exchanged a long-suffering glance with the drake wrapped tight about his neck.

"Whatever for?" Daybreak asked. "You could barely left it."

"Don't have to lift it. Someone will pay for a weapon like that."

By all technicality the merchant was right. Daybreak simply had no interest. They made their living as an escort, not a merchant, and had little use for the treasures the delvers took from this place.

"Come and help me with this," Aizere demanded anyway, before wrapping his teeth about the long-rusted hilt and throwing the whole of his weight into his neck. The greatsword did not even twitch.

"Do we have to?" Cyneric whined, even as he ambled slowly over to push his head against the hilt.

"I can't even reach..." Dahlia's protest was not without interest, but she was right. The puck wouldn't be much use with her feet hopped up off the ground.

"Fine," Daybreak sighed, and then, "Darling, my dear, would you?" The drake chirped reluctantly and coiled off of Daybreak's neck. Winding her long, thin body about the blade she began scratching and biting at the edges of the wound which had felled this beast. Tiny chips of bone fell away, like sawdust. Even with all four of them working, it took the better part of an hour to free the blade from its prison. Daybreak only waited until the clattering of metal rang sharp through the caves before moving on, with no interest at all in inspecting Aizere's hard won prize.
