[MEDIUM] Riddle Time!

I glanced over at Cal as we all headed down the corridor. We'd stopped speaking a minute ago, after our ears picked up the sounds of another pair of voices at the end of the corridor. I'd motioned for Emrys and Moose to stay behind me, to make sure that I was the first one to face the strangers. While I still couldn't make out what the voices were talking about, I could tell that they were arguing about something. We were at the exit of the passageway now, and I still couldn't make out any words. Nothing else for it I guess. I stepped forward into the cavern, ready to defend my team if needs be, only to be met with... nothing?? There was nobody in the cavern. Taking another look around, I saw two doorways, each with an intricate design carved into the rock around it. Above each doorway was a face, carved into the same stone as the decorations. One's face was split with a massive grin, while the other was wearing the grumpiest frown I'd ever seen.
" I don't understand" I said, turning to face the rest of my party. "I could have sworn that the voices-"
"Ha! We hear that a lot, 'i don't understand"
I span around, and realised that the face with the grin had moved slightly. The voices we'd heard in the corridor must have come from these stone faces?
"What are you?" I asked.
"Bit of a rude question. What are you?"
I stared, uncomprehendingly, at the face.
Behind me, Emrys cleared his throat.
"Tiber, perhaps this is a task more suited to myself and Callisto, if we may?"
I personally agreed. There was nothing to fight here, and I'm the first to say that I'm not the smartest courser around. I'd seen this kind of thing in dungeons before, and I'd rather face 100 monster fights than deal with any riddles. But Cal? He's smart, and even better, he has charisma. He could work his way into anyones heart, even if that anyone is just a face made of stone. And though I didn't know Emrys that well, my instincts said that trickery and riddles would be his forte.

I stepped back and let them both pass me. Moose moved over to me and pressed against me gently, in solidarity. I had a feeling I wasn't the only one who felt a little useless in situations that required a lot of brainpower.

As Cal and Emrys stepped forward in unison, the faces above the doorways began to speak.
"Well met, traveller"
"Before you lies a choice"
"Do you take the left path, or the right?"
"Do you trust the face that scowls, or the face that beams?"
"Choose well, dear hearts, for doom lies ahead for those who aren't cautious."
"And riches lie in wait for the brave of spirit."

Cal and Emrys looked at each other, and then asked a question each in such quick succession that they could have rehearsed this.
"Which of you conceals the route to safety?"
"Which one of you can we trust?"

Abrupt laughter cackled out of both stone faces.
"Oh, you arent the one who gets to make the choice."
"No, no, the one to succeed must be the one that first approached."

I had a sinking feeling in my stomach. Emrys and Cal looked at each other again, and then slowly turned to look at me.
I sighed and stepped up to the doorways, nestled inbetween Cal and Emrys, with Moose at my back.

Here goes nothing.
