[DD3] Held Forevermore

Fetch paused, the hoofsteps behind her had stopped. She knew that it wouldn't be anything needing her immediate attention, but she turned around quickly anyways, catching a glimpse at Madness.

He not only had stopped, but he had sat down on the moist grass of the moor. Not something that she would suggest, but it wasn't like she could stop him now. His eyes looked... sad. Not explicitly sad, mind- but a sort of ancient sadness being resurfaced.  A sadness that one holds in their heart ever since the moment they are born. A sorrow that lives in every courser, but also one that she didn't see expressed much in those of a choleric temperament.

She stepped over, following Madness' gaze to see what he was so entranced by.

Ah. The skeletons. She knew this duo of corpses well, having seen them time and time again. They were the outliers among the field of bones. She supposed the sight would be one that would catch the attention of someone new to the moor, especially if they were used to the terrifying sights of the other floors.

"Why is it... holding them like that?" Madness spoke, his tone softer than Fetch was expecting.

She smiled, knowing that Madness couldn't see it with how intensely he was staring at the skeletal scene in front of him. "Holding them like that, because they're friends. Did you know that phantasmal hands will rub a courser's head if they're well-bonded with them?"

"What does that have to do with-" The choleric started, only to pause for a moment- experiencing one of his rare 'smart' moments. The skeleton holding the courser also had hands... maybe creatures with hands had similar ways of showing affection? "Nevermind." He huffed.

"Hehe, Nevermind." Fetch giggled, admittedly jabbing at the other a small bit, mocking his voice as she repeated his singular word of annoyance. Despite the jabbing, she continued to stand by him as he stared, his eyes only seeming to focus even further on the sight.

Madness felt his head tilt similarly to the courser skull, almost as if trying to imagine what the touch would have felt like. Would it have felt loving? Would he be able to feel the friendship from such a touch if he was in that courser's place?

So long ago, did this courser feel loved? When death took them while being held like this, did it feel peaceful as their life slipped away? Or perhaps they died much more dramatically, and it was only after their death that they were made to be held by someone dear to them. Would it make them feel cared for in the afterlife? If this courser's spirit still wandered the dungeon... did they know that they were adored in their final moments?

"If you keep your neck like that for too long, it'll get stuck!" Fetch spoke, singing a little as she lightly tilted Madness' head back up. Madness looked to her, rolling his eyes as he did so. It certainly didn't take him long to recover from his small mental tangent. "It will not get stuck. That's not how necks work... right?"

She tilted her head towards him, a smirk coming into view. "That's not how necks work? Did you know that if you don't take care of your hooves they can become inflamed and take months to go back to normal due to needing to naturally drain infected liquid from the hoof? That, or they pretty much carve your whole hoof off to get it to drain faster."

Madness' ears pinned back immediately at such a thought. "I didn't know that, and I would much prefer if you didn't expand my knowledge on it any further." It had been a nonsequiter, but one that made a point. Clearly she knew more about a courser's body than he did.

"Well, now you do know." With that, she turned towards the direction they were heading originally. "We can keep going now. Amity and Cordial will be here for all of eternity if you want to look at them another day."

The other courser tilted his head. "Amity and Cordial? Is that... actually what their names used to be?"

"What their names used to be..." Fetch spoke with a bit of a hum as she began to walk. Madness sighed. "I'll take that to mean that you just made those names up, then." Fetch simply giggled in response, which only made Madness even more tired of his guide. He swore that he could've been just fine down here without being told riddles and random trivia barely related to whatever topic of conversation came up.

Despite his annoyance, he followed Fetch as she walked away from the skeletons. She was right. When he became a better dungeoneer, when he could find his way down here on his own, then he could see the skeletons again. Maybe next time he could have a little more time to think without an ominous guide pushing him forwards.

Skeletal remains of humanoids and Coursers alike are a common sight on the Moor, but you’ve stumbled upon a pair of them in a strange pose. The human’s arms are wrapped around the Courser’s skull, their foreheads touching one another. How does this strike you?
