Denver [DD5] By My Side

Denver had been delving into the labyrinthian ruins on his own more and more lately, finding that he was a little more capable than he’d first expected when it came to traversing the mysterious depths. He thought he’d preferred the company of others, an ear to chatter to or at least a quiet but reassuring presence to fall back on when things got hairy, but the quiet was nice too- the distant drip drip drip of determined stalactites, or gentle crackling of ancient and magical torches. It was hard to say which was better, really.

Today the massive bay trotted jauntily alongside his younger sister; Callahan. Little Cally had found the sublevel quite a ways before he himself had with the help of Logue the mercenary- not that he should be surprised. She had a knack for these kinds of things, and made for a valuable companion when risking those darker spaces, the ones that made the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. She was fearless and strong, and had a common sense that Denver most certainly lacked. He was better suited when impulse or deception was needed. On his ventures in alone, he was likely to sample a poisoned treat or steal a cursed jewel without a second thought, only recently becoming the slightest bit more cautious when it came to the unknown. “You were literally just about to grab it” Callahan remarked about the trinket they’d just passed in a chamber a moment before; a foreboding coin engraved with a knight’s skull, emanating a faint and almost painful ringing sound that made him feel dizzy.

“I’m sure I don’t know what you’re talking about~” The larger bay retorted with a playful lilt, nudging his sister’s shoulder with his snout. “I was only trying to say how intricate the craftsmanship was” His smile was as easy as ever when he was with the other courser, her company a stable constant since the death of their parents when she was young.

Sure you were.” Cally rolled her eyes, and pushed against him in turn. It was nice to finally catch up again, things had been so busy in their little settlement, coursers journeying to the dungeon entrances more often, his sister included. They’d both gotten better, and it was good to see that their skills still complimented each other quite well.

It had always been like that. In the city where the poor were left to starve, there was little they could do but take advantage of their natural talents… and Denver had no issue charming plump aristocrats or distracting desperate merchants while Callahan took whatever they needed. When things got rough, they got clever. Now, life was a little less sharp-edged, their ventures more choice than necessity.. though the necessity was certainly still there.

The others in Fernborough had been taking care of them too, though. Taking care of his sister… and that mattered. She mattered, truthfully more than anything else, though he might not say those exact words so easily aloud.

If he had to be stuck by anyone’s side, especially down in the dark and the dangerous, he would always choose Callahan.

The odds of surviving the dungeon are greater in numbers. Every Courser has their role in a party: what’s yours? Or do you prefer to work alone without dividing your spoils?
