[DD1] The Existence of the Knight

Kestrel takes each step with the confidence of someone that has walked and trodded the endless paths, caverns, steppes, and expanses of the Buried Kingdom, the stone beneath her warmed; likely from the closeness of the second level to this Pyramid like structure. Her pale hooves catch the grooves of the rock with ease, worn and well curved to the rough, unique enviroment of the the underneath.

Tossing her thick straight mane to the side, making sure to keep both eyes open and wary for the perils that come with her duties; be it falling from the height she found herself in, to the swooping strikes of bats and other creatures, to the enviromental splash like droppings or spray of lava. She has travelled too much to be as careless as some that took these paths.

She will admit to herself that she has never seen these steppes or the structure in this part of the underneath, and yet that will not stop her in her duties; she must chart, mark, and clean the area for any other potential travellers.

The stone shifts beneath her at the last trailing thought passes through her keen mind, her ears swiveling to categorize each and every sound around her.

Stilling with one feet still up in the air to take the next step, a voice rings out as deep as the cracks in the stone, "LITTLE COURSER."

The fur on her back stands on end and she searches the area for the cause of the voice, "H-Hello?"

"WHERE IS YOUR KNIGHT, COURSER?" It follows again, the stone shaking beneath her hooves and causing her to slam and spread her feet wide to take the brunt of the reverbation.

"What is a knight, voice on high?" She calls out, confused and looking for what mouth could be spewing these foreign words to her.

"THE MASTER, THE CARER, THE ONE BEFORE." It replies, eyes and mouth moving in the base of stone far above her.

Oh, no, she was stepping on the creature! Kestrel cringes, mouth twisting and tail lashing behind her. How did she not notice this before now? Was the creature so great, powerful, and ancient that they had simply lain upon the rock here and became one with it? She could not let it suffer her sharp hooves any longer, in any case.

"I'm, sorry! I don't know of what you speak!" She replies, trying to determine how to remove herself from their body without further pain... If the creature felt her at all, it wasn't like she was a foal anymore, what a silly thought. She had tons of meat on her frame, weighted further by her dungeoning saddle bags and packs. Her lashes flutter on her face and she begins to walk carefully, but as quickly as she could back down the steppes.

This was an unusual experience, but she no place here, and certainly not enough bravery to keep herself propped against the body of an ancient being that spoke in riddles and used foreign words.

There was no 'Master' of the Coursers.

"As you climb what you believed to be a step pyramid, a voice booms out to you, shaking the stone beneath you: "LITTLE COURSER." You realize you are standing on a pair of knees, and above you, a benevolent face in the rock appears to smile. He asks you a question you don't exactly understand: "WHERE IS YOUR KNIGHT?" "
