Merlin had been foolish entering the Earthen Furnace without any methods to regulate his temperature previously. One would think that, with such a name, he would have considered the possibility that it would be rather hot, but he had somehow not expected it to be so hot. 

After his encounter with the prophetic eternal brazier, Merlin vowed to take a slight respite from diving and hone his skills and equipment. This included manufacturing a cooling system for both him and Lovell. Finding something was difficult, as he was unsure what exactly he was looking for. 

An endless water source would provide very little relief, as the water would evaporate the second it comes into contact with the heat, less gear was impractical with the dangers each cavern held, and he could find no enchanter willing to imbue a magic fan with his budget. 

His solution came unintentionally from Lovell, who had taken to diving for mice in the snow while Merlin pranced from vendor to vendor. Snow… Ice… 

“You genius little bird!” Lovell glanced up, rodent dangling from his beak, and tilted his head in mild confusion. 

Once Merlin had an idea, the followthrough took little time. Creating satchels of un-melting ice was an easy enough task for any competent sorcerer. 

Laden with thin cloth bags full of eternal ice, Merlin was quite satisfied with his ideas, and after wearing the set through several ventures within the Earthen Furnace, he decided that the mild relief was well worth the cost.
