Alkestis wanted to believe the whispers were only a breeze, but there really was no way for a breeze to get into this part of the cavern. Nothing around her moved and all else was silent. Only whispers. Whispers too clear to be wind. Whispers amplified by the echoes of the Overgrown Cavern. No amount of vegetation could dampen the echoes of the whispered voices that bounced off these walls.

Follow us… into the shadows, into the depths. Treasure awaits and so does death.

The liver chestnut courser could almost swear she heard the whispered voice giggle after it finished its phrase. Repeated over and over, this strange mantra that only became more clear with each instance, and more voices joined. The echoes began to overlap until it was almost too much.

“No… no, no, no, no, nooooo,” Alkestis hissed quietly.

It stopped. The echoes grew still. Silence.

Why not? It then asked.

“OH HELL NO!” she voiced loudly.

The mantra began up again and Alkestis became overwhelmed. Normally she would investigate the voices to find the true source, but something told her not to. A voice inside her screamed for her to run. And so she did. Away from the echoes she hurried away from the section of the dungeon that appeared to be the source. The only confirmation she received that she was heading away was the fact that the voices grew quieter and quieter with each step she took.

Then silence. Which was worse? The whispered voices? Or the unknown silence? Alkestis wasn’t quite sure.
