[DD3] Spooky
"You said there was something awesome through here, right?" Lorcan asked as he carefully traversed after the other Courser. He had been focused on the ground, which had slowly become more and more littered with items on which he could chip a hoof, or worse - be impaled. He'd come to focus solely on the ground, with only occasional glances up at Terrence, who walked with head held high, total confidence in his step.
Lorcan sidestepped yet another spearpoint he had almost stepped on with a nicker, warning it off.
Terrence glanced back furtively, quickly embarrased that he was caught caring. He tossed his mane to hide the motion, and boldly replied, "Through here? It is here." The larger Courser slowed his pace so Lorcan could come up alongside him, then both paused. "Look up, Lorcan."
Finding a spot to stand that didnt feel unsafe, Lorcan planted his feet and looked up to where Terrence indicated. Above them, a massive banner waved in the desolate breeze that seemed to arrive just for this moment. Adorned upon the tattered fabric was a symbol - two coursers locked in battle, teeth sunk into one another's necks. Behind that, a pentacle loomed, locking the battle into an eternal cycle. Something itched in the back of his head in response, a feeling. Something felt familiar, but what?
"The tales of humans," Terrence offered, as if hearing Lorcan's thoughts. "They were eradicated but why?"
Lorcan tore his eyes away from the banner to look around the battlefield. The symbol adorned many of the spears and swords he'd been dodging as he picked his way through to here. Somehow, in all that time, he hadn't noticed the weaponry meant something. The moor was covered in armor, skeletons, and here and there a far-too-new skeleton reminded him this was a dangerous place. Did Terrence lead him here knowing he wasn't prepared? Lorcan suddenly felt the urge to try and pocket one of the swords for protection. The stories of this place were enough to give him nightmares...
"I've been here a few times now," Terrence began speaking again to fill the silence. "Each time I come, things move around. Skeletons shift, banners advance and change positions, its like the battle is still on."
"Are you sure we should be here, then?" Lorcan stared wide-eyed at the world around them.
"Why not?" Terrence chuckled, then nodded to something nearby. "There's excellent loot, the others arent brave enough. Look in that cart there."
Lorcan cautiously stepped towards it, moving debris from atop the ruined equipment. Terrence came closer to look, too, saying something about sharing the loot, but Lorcan was frozen. He'd definitely seen something move in there.
Frozen in fear, Lorcan scanned the darkness again. Terrence leaned in, noticing Lorcan's caution.
"I'm sure its just some monster parts. They squirm sometimes." When Lorcan didnt seem comforted, he moved forward to reach in himself. "Here, i'll get it while you watch."
Terrence gathered the items as he went, glancing at Lorcan for confirmation he was safe occasionally. Once he was done, he pulled back to a safe distance from the cart, calling Lorcan away.
Lorcan, having seen no further movement, slowly began to move from his alert position. His joints creaked as he moved his head and began to step bsck.
Once near Terrence, Lorcan felt comfortable enough to remove his gaze. He still glanced from time to time, but the loot managed to get him through enough for the pair to work their way back to less dangerous areas of the moor, passing pentacles adorned by fighting coursers.
Lorcan could only hope they wouldn't be followed.
