[DD1] dissonant whispers (au)
Desperately wiping her sweaty palms on the hem of her shirt, Brynn makes her way deeper into the dungeon. She's holding onto her cool... holding onto it, clawing at it. For as much as she loves being in the dungeons, there's something eerie about it. Among the lushest part of the caves, humidity sinking deep into her skin-- it's like breathing soup. Brynn chuckles to herself, trying to break the tension in her chest. It's an ache, one she doesn't know how to place.
It's the whispers, the words, the hum and call of the dungeon that draws her in. They're muffled at first, drawing her deeper into the dungeon. Deeper and farther than she's adventured before, though the confidence in her steps doesn't wane. Have to do everything with great confidence, or at least fake it until she makes it. There's no fleeting idea that the whispers are anything less than real. At least, not at first.
When she stops to listen for a while, Brynn finds herself... confused. Chewing on her lower lip for a moment, trying to puzzle out exactly what she was experiencing. Did that voice sound like her own? Brow crumpling in confusion, she casts a glance to her companion. "Rocky, do you hear that?" With a slow shake of his obsidian head, Brynn's concerns only grew. Rocky didn't really have ears, as far as she could tell, but still. Troubling.
Having a hard time tracking down exactly where the whispers are coming from, they venture deeper. Brynn's steps are a bit more cautious now, the troubling feeling that they weren't as alone down here as she initially thought still hanging in her chest. There's a tightness to the feeling, her head buzzing with it. As they enter a large, seemingly empty room, they sound no closer. They sound no farther away. Anxious and torn, she trudges forth anyway. The dungeon is filled with secrets, not all of them as friendly as she'd hoped.
