[DD1] Beauty and Terror

The descent into the Overgrown Caverns had been steep and humid. Lush, but strange, plants pushed their way out of every crack the stonework offered them. Blackbird felt compelled to frequently stop and study the plants. While a handful were species that she'd seen above, or seen described in books the vast majority were entirely novel. It thrilled her. She'd hoped to find a few old books that would share a few shards of knowledge, but the dungeon had so much more than that to offer! The Courser was quite sure that she could spend the rest of her days just studying the plant life that made its home here. Fronds and petals and leaves and roots were all around her, inviting a closer investigation.

A particularly curious looking flower drew her attention. It was making its home on an ancient crumbled statue. She could made out what might have been hooves. Perhaps it had been carved to honour a particularly gifted Courser. But now it was hosting a plant with broad, shiny leaves and tiny, delicate, velvety looking blossoms. Their petals curled outward, and they were of the palest sky blue colour. Blackbird was transfixed. She shuffled forward, to keep a better look, and to detect if the flower had a scent when she stepped into something.

The something wriggled in a most displeasing way. She shook her leg, only to realized that whatever it was was very alive, and had grabbed onto her with six disgusting tentacles. Aghast, the woad Courser smeared the foul, grasping creature into the remains of the statue. It released her, and then hissed and squealed away, into a crack in the wall. Blackbird shuddered. It was important to keep her wits about her, and consider each step with care. Even if there were beautiful things to look at there were also terrible things down here. It was important to be aware of both.

You step in something with a sinister texture that wriggles unpleasantly under your hoof. You try to shake it off, but six sticky appendages sucker onto you. Gack!! How do you free your foot from this creature’s grasp?
