[DD2] big brother vibes (au)
The dungeons are quiet, especially at this hour. Kept company by only the soft padding of his feet against the stone floor, and the quiet flap of Khors's wings, it's comforting. Andrej finds comfort in being on his own. Freedom, in a way. Sure, it's not the freedom he'd pictured, but it's freedom all the same. Leaving... coming back... feeling like the prodigal son, in the worst way. Drawn back to the dungeons by the only thing that could bring him back. It's the reason he makes an effort to get to know them now. Zora had to be down here, somewhere, right?
Stopping and running a hand through his dark hair, surveying the warm landscape before him. There's so much of it to see, and he needed to check it top to bottom. The days were as trying as they were long, and Andrej still felt like he was wasting time. It's hard not to, when he feels like he's so far behind. There's still hope in his heart, that she's down here. Every day a new, desperate prayer. The ache in his chest was ceaseless. There's a part of Andrej that grapples with even being allowed to hurt like this.
As he rounds a corner, the man catches a muffled sound. Is that... was someone crying? The telltale sniffling of a little girl, weeping for reasons unknown to him. Picking up his pace, a delusional hope that he knows the source of those tears. Sure, it's awful that whoever it was happened to be crying, but maybe... maybe he could hope. It could be Zora. The whole ordeal could be over, just like that, and he could pull her from this place and go back to his life. It's a hope Andrej pins more on than he cares to admit.
Quickly closing the gap, the Furnace showing him a rather spacious room. In the corner, a little girl, knees tucked close to her chest. Andrej's heart sinks as he lays eyes on a shock of red hair... not Zora. Not Zora, but still a girl that was both very small and very lost. Well, he's not just going to leave her down here. "Hey, hey it's okay. Are you lost?" The man closes the gap, kneeling at what was hopefully a safe distance. The tearful child looks up, eyes puffy and red, nods. Andrej is quick to offer his backup canteen, the one he hadn't cracked into yet.
"Would you like to come with me, back topside? I was thinking about heading back for the day." A lie, but he wouldn't make the child feel worse about her situation. No, he wouldn't let her even think she was causing him trouble, wouldn't let her dwell on the predicament at hand. They'd simply head back together, like a very small party.
