[DD1] The Bottomless Pit

The dim light of the cavern barely touched the edges of the hole, its darkness a yawning void that seemed to swallow all sound and warmth. Enok’s hooves, usually so sure and steady on the stone floor, faltered as they neared the abyss. The air around him hung still, unnervingly thick, as if the very walls held their breath, waiting for his next move. A strange pull tightened in his chest, an insistent urging that quickened his pulse, though every instinct in his mind screamed for him to turn away.

Why this hole? The question echoed in his thoughts, his ears twitching as if to catch a whisper that was never there. This wasn’t the path he was meant to follow, not where the tunnel was supposed to lead him. The familiar scents of moss and damp earth that usually brought him comfort were laced with something foreign, something ancient. The ground beneath him thrummed with a silent, persistent call, a vibration that set his nerves on edge.

His breath came slow and deliberate, but beneath that forced calm, his heart drummed a wild rhythm, each beat reverberating in his ears. The void below beckoned, promising something he couldn’t quite grasp—a promise, or perhaps a threat. The distinction felt razor-thin, like the edge of a blade. His muscles tensed, his body caught between instinct and curiosity. Every fiber of his being urged him to retreat, to seek the safety of the well-trodden path that countless hooves had marked before him. Yet his legs felt heavy, rooted in place, as though the void was reaching up, wrapping invisible tendrils around his limbs, gently pulling him closer.

Just one step… just a glance… what harm could it do? The thought slithered into his mind, unbidden, carrying with it a cold shiver that raced down his spine. His nostrils flared as he inhaled deeply, searching for any scent, any sign to explain this pull. But the air was thick with emptiness, a void that promised both answers and annihilation.

A sudden, sharp chill traced the length of his neck, bristling the coarse hairs along his mane. Enok’s eyes narrowed, locking onto the blackness below, his usually calm mind now a storm of racing thoughts. There was something down there, something ancient, something forgotten—or was it simply a reflection of his own deepest fears? The darkness seemed to stare back at him, patient, unyielding, almost inviting. It urged him closer, much like the old stories that had captivated him as a colt—tales of knights and dragons, of battles waged in the depths of forgotten realms.

But this was no tale. This was real, and the hole before him wasn’t merely an opening in the earth—it was a mouth, wide open, waiting. A pit of darkness that whispered secrets of danger and the unknown, promising a descent from which he might never return.

His gaze flicked back to the safer path behind him, the one he should take, the one every part of him screamed at him to choose. But the pull remained, stronger now, like the charged air before a storm.

Enok drew in a deep breath, the scent of cold stone filling his lungs, grounding him in the present. He would not be reckless, but neither could he completely ignore this… whatever it was. Slowly, deliberately, he began to back away, the pull weakening with each step until the hole became just a shadow in the distance, a murmur in the silence.

Not today, he thought, turning his back on the void, though its memory clung to his mind like the aftertaste of bitter roots. The darkness had revealed something to him—a glimpse of something old, something dangerous. And though he would leave it behind for now, he knew with a certainty that this would not be the last time it called to him.

Enok comes across a very... inviting hole in the dungeon floor. He battles with himself to avoid the temptation of entering the pit, being swallowed by it.
