[DD2] Shadows Dance Across The Room
Apparition was born in the dungeon, a child spawned by the dungeon's internals upon Phantasm and Fetch spending many hours together in silence. It was always a bit strange when the dungeon decided you made a good pair, and didn't wait for you to settle any of that business yourself.
Apparition, born as they were, never could 'escape' the call long enough to resist it. It was always here, shaping them, and when either parent watched them, it was in the dungeon walls. Phantasm had no accommodations outside the dungeon - they only left to speak with clients, employers. There was an offer, to the child, early on; if they wished to be away from the dungeon, they could be sent to live with a relation of Phantasm's. Apparition had seemed confused, and said no, why would they wish to be away from here?
"...I suppose we'll ask you again when you're a bit older. Make certain you're sure." Phantasm had said, after a stretch of minutes. Fetch had nodded her own agreement.
A while later, Devereux had come - a leggy foal not much older than Apparition themselves, taken under Phantasm's care. "They're your cousin." Phantasm had said - and it was clear then to Apparition that something had happened, something where they were born, that led to Devereux being here, living with them both. Apparition knew better than to pry at it, though, and the dungeon felt all the more welcome when Dev was here with them both. When Phantasm was doing dangerous work, Apparition and Devereux would be under someone else's minding, and both of them leeched the trade, learned it from Phantasm.
Devereux was more of a sibling, then a cousin, when it came down to it - blood aside. They had their parents, Phantasm more often than Fetch (though they were told they looked much like her, by many), they had their Dev, and they had their owl, a great gray sort called Spectre, who was a helpful little scout when he wasn't pestering Devereux's goose, Foile. Farsight, too, was a family member - Phantasm's clever and bright-eyed osprey, who could spot a mouse from many miles off.
The dungeon had their family, and the dungeon was home in this way. Everything was good.
"Every Courser hears the call of the dungeon in their lifetime. Most answer. Some don’t. What is it you seek here beneath the surface: Treasure? Adventure? Or something harder to define?"
