[DD1] [DD1] Jewel Beetles
It had been a rather boring exploration that day for the bay Courser, nothing really exciting had been happening at all and when Söl had been walking slowly through the corridor and as he looked down on the filthy floor he wasn’t expecting the glint that caught his eye to be more than shiny muck glaring in the shine of the lights surrounding him in the cave. But it was more than just shiny, wet dirt. It was two gem studded beetles, battling each other with no thought of the rest of the world. He wondered if they even knew that he was there watching them. It seemed as if nothing existed outside of their fight. Whatever they fought over meant life or death to them clearly. If it had been a female beetle it seemed as if she had long since decided that it wasn’t much worth her trouble to stay to watch the fight and had instead scurried off to find something else to do. But maybe it wasn’t for a lady’s sake they fought. They could be fighting for territory. He wondered what truly led to this fight.
Söl sat down to get closer to them and looked over the beetles. Followed their fight. One beetle slowly lifted the other one and Söl was sure that he would be winning, that the fight would be ending. But as if the second beetle caught his second wind he suddenly turned the table. The beetle managed to get his feet back on the floor and it lifted the first beetle quickly. It seemed as if it was holding its enemy in the air to tease it, Söl could imagine it taunting its foe as it prepared to flip it over. Telling it to never underestimate someone else like that. Söl managed to give them personalities and voices as they fought. It was the most entertaining stuff he had seen all day after all.
The flip was nothing but anti-climatic for Söl. It didn’t send shivers through his spine or make the entire cave quake. He hadn’t expected it too. But it would have been pretty amazing if it did. He sighed. It had still been a pretty good fight. Had he been the same size as the bejewelled beetles he was sure it would have been an amazing battle. In the end it was barely more than a rest for him. He slowly rose and the winning beetle started to scurry away from the vibrations from him. He carefully picked it up and placed it in his bags before doing the same to the beetle frantically trying to flip itself back over to also scurry away from the enormous creature they had failed to notice during the fight. But Söl carefully grabbed the second beetle and placed it in a different bag. He didn’t want to cause them too much stress and have them fight the rest of the dive after all.
Söl made his way through the corridor once more. Happy that he stopped for a bit.
