[HARD] Campaign 007: Training the Newbies Aldric 2
After they destroyed the pillar with their ranged attacks, the hands vanished and they could plunder the room for the spoils. There were a couple jewelry charms which had residual magic in them, a magical tome and some herbs. After the room was clear, they went back out to look for the other exits.
One led them into a field, where the only building in walking distance was surrounded by barren fields and dried up trees.
"This looks like the outside of one of those abandoned prisons again," Samantha commented, "I haven't seen another in a few years."
"Will we be burying the bones again if there are some inside?" Flynn asked.
Edos didn't answer and walked ahead to lift up the bar keeping the door shut instead.
Aldric was more than a little curious about what would be inside. It was dusty and very stall. The jail had different compartments and each had a bolt on the door. Most of the stalls were filled with debris but one are two did also have in courser bones though they seemed a bit smaller.
"This is sad," Samantha sighed, "Do they just starve to death?"
"Maybe they were reliant on the captors for food..." Aldric suggested, "I don't understand why they didn't just jump over these bolted doors and got out though. A couple kicks would definitely have broken down the door."
"It's unclear what state they were in when they died but it was undoubtedly a very long time ago. I would still like to honor them by burying the bones," Edos stated.
"I don't mind," Samantha was quick to say, "I'll help you while Flynn and Aldric can search the rest of the building."
"Oh, can I help the General while you search?" Aldric asked quickly. Then he felt like knocking in his own head for being too obvious.
No one else seemed to notice that he was over-eager or if they did, they didn't mention it, so he got to stay with Edos.
They first chose a burial sight outside and got the hounds to start digging. The hounds seemed happy enough to do this, while they only surpervised.
"Aldric," Edos said.
Aldric tensed up at hearing his name with nothing else added and he glanced over a Edos.
"Yes, General?"
"Is there something that you wanted to talk to be about that you advocated to be my partner?" the other courser asked him.
Aldric found it hard to maintain eye contact and he wished that a another hole besides the one being dug right now would open up and swallow him.
"Well.. I uhh.." he stumbled over his words, and then paused and tried to regroup. He decided to just be honest about it, "I wanted to spend time with you that's all."
Edos' eyes darkened and Aldric finally gave into the urge to look away.
You've gone and done it now, he thought.
"Am I role model or are you trying to be my mate?" Edos asked him bluntly.
Aldric's mouth dropped open with shock and he closed it as soon as he noticed. He almost snorted and had to convince himself not to bounce back on his hooves.
"I- well.. both?" he said, and he sound shaky to his own ears.
"You don't seem very confident about that but then you were brave enough to try to turn a mission into a first date," Edos commented.
Aldric couldn't really tell from Edos' tone if he was being praised of reprimanded. Unsure how to respond he stared at Edos kind of dumbly.
"I'm not upset with your boldness," Edos assured him, "I have to admit to being shocked. The only response I can give you, is let's talk about it when we camp."
Aldric felt like his emotions were see-sawing up and down and making him feel unstable but it wasn't the worst outcome yet. At least it seemed some what like he had a chance.
When the hounds were finished, they transported the bones over in sacks that Flynn found at the back of the building and buried the two sets of bones side by side. Edos said a soft prayer and then their was a flash of light.
Wow... what magic is this?
Aldric was aware that Edos worshiped the harvest god, after all he made no secret of it and Harvest Season was a time of much festivity and merry making at the Wolf Thorn. He had however though it was all just.. faith with no action or it might be better to state it as, faith with no real outworking.
He of course knew magic was on the rise in the world but this... this was something different.
"You seem to have shocked the recruit," Samantha commented.
"It is always shocking the first time," Flynn commented, "I still can't believe that Gods are real?!"
Aldric was sharing that sentiment. His home country did not have a much religion. There was a strong belief in karma and spiritual debt; but god was a more vague idea and it was definitely one god over all. The mere existence of a god of one specific thing and it actually being real was shocking to his core.
"We're done here," Edos declared, "Was there anything of worth in the barn?"
"There is an entire upper room left to search but Flynn had a bad feeling about it and wanted all to go investigate," Samantha explained.
"Shall we rest a bit and then go?" Edos asked.
They all agreed to the short break and Samantha took out some dried rations and water to share.
