Maybe it was a good thing that Aithbhreac was so distrusting of everything. The crown had been well-hidden and it was only a matter of an unlucky trip that had uncovered it. Now the wretched thing was beckoning to her and she was not about that, no sir.

'Put me on, dear thing, see what riches I can bestow upon you, what powers you may hold...'

Aithbhreac stepped backwards, away from the crown. "Oh, by the stones, absolutely not," she said, only half-concerned that she was, more or less, talking to herself. The crown didn't have sapience on its own -- she was pretty sure of that, at least.

Besides, she was down on this level on a mission for Aethon. She had to find a very specific relic, though he had been incredibly vague on the matter.

'Yes, me, take me! I will help your king, your liege.' The crown seemed to pulse with light, drawing her eyes towards it once more. Maybe this was the artifact, actually? She looked it over. It was awfully plain, if not for the gold it was made of, but it also seemed ancient to her. Well, no matter, she thought to herself as she picked the crown up and gently pressed it into her satchel. If Aethon didn't want it, perhaps she could be allowed to keep it.

----

"What is that?" Aethon scoweled, investigating the crown. Aithbhreac stumbled, ears back in unease.

"It's -- The relic -- I thought--?"

"No!" he whirled on her, teeth bared in agitation. "It was a medallion, you stupid... I can't trust you for anything, can I? I'll get someone else to find it, by the Sun..."

Aithbhreac silently watched him stalk off, uneasily shifting her eyes back to the crown.

'Uncalled for, unjust, unfair,' it began to chant -- it was chanting. 'Keep me with you, princess, kind one, slighted one. I will protect and defend, I will keep you safe, grow your strength.'

Aithbhreac found herself nodding along, transfixed by the golden pulse. She wasn't concerned, not anymore, and if Aethon didn't want it...

'Yes!' it cried as she maneuvered it onto her head. She hadn't been sure it would fit, but the metal seemed to twist and bend to fit her. It went silent then, but the presence remained and soothed her, even as her anxiety about Aethon grew.

Under layers of rock, its burial seemingly intentional, you find a chest lined with satin. Inside is a crown, glittering gold. Deep inside, you feel compelled to bend down and slip it over your ears. You feel as if it *wanted* you to find it, that this crown was made for you, and that you were destined to wear it. Does this compulsion make you uneasy, or do you give into the crown’s pull?
