[DD2] A Fetch Quest

The regular clicking of Screech's echolocation was all the sound that followed in Neo's wake, pinging off the walls and offering guidance for the painted bat as he flew, while having the added benefit of providing guidance for the courser as she made her way through the maze of tunnels that were her home.

She'd been awake for quite some time her usual grazing place having moved to another section of the dungeons as it was wont to do, and so had to travel a bit further than She'd have liked to go from food to water. But now she was quenched and sated, and in truth, a little bored. Painted Bats were great company most of the time, but there was a certain... thrill to being around others and their odd little quirks that she found she craved on occasion.

She didn't wander aimlessly for long, her head lifting at the sound of approaching footfalls and her lips curving to a pleased smile as she recognised them - no easy feat for most, but there were a few specific coursers who she recognised easily - and the glowing hand that lit her way was a bit of a giveaway.

"The pixies moved your food again?" Fetch asked once she sighted Neo, her attention less on her friend than it was their surroundings, catching sight of Screech near the ceiling before turning to head back the way she'd come.

"I have something to show you."

With that statement, Fetch was walking back down her tunnel, unconcerned as to whether Neo followed or not, though there was no doubt she would. It was a common enough occurrence, and Neo looked forward to the times the other courser sought her out. She never pressured her to speak, and with her own, often misunderstood behaviour, Fetch didn't seem to mind that Neo had her own. She never pressured her to talk, and seemed to understand whatever message Neo had to get accross - though she was perhaps one of the few regular horses she met that had heard her speak for one reason or another.

The direction was easy to discern, the heat to the walls a dead giveaway even if she hadn't known the route they were taking. Fetch chattered on while they walked, scolding the pixies who she often blamed for the dungeon's movements, or commenting on the state of ... something that didn't quite make sense, but which was interesting all the same. The courser had a unique perspective on their world that Neo liked hearing, and she found her boredom disappearing into nothing.

By the time they arrived - a fact she knew because Fetch went suddenly silent, waiting for Neo to see where she'd brought them - Screech had given up his pathfinding, the hand offering enough light for the darkest of areas and instead tangling himself into Neo's mane, swinging himself upside down with a familiarity that spike of the amount of times he'd done just this, easily moving with the courser's steps.

It wasn't quite so obvious what it was Fetch had brought her to, as Neo stepped closer to investigate the intricate metalwork of the brazier and the flames contained within. It seemed somehow older than anything she'd seen to date... impossible, but she could not account for the finesse to the craft, nor the signs of ageing.

"It's a bit chilly, don't you think?"

Fetch's words were a puzzle in themselves, Neo lifting her head to look at her friend and the cheeky expression as she watched her. She hadn't noticed that the often draining heat of the furnace hadn't stifled her at all since she'd gotten here, and now, with Fetch's question ringing through her ears, she realised that she was in fact cooler than normal, an experimental step closer proving it was the flame that was causing it.

There were coals inside the brazier, the flames clearly burning on the fuel though the coal didn't recede. Fetch's low chuckle was encouragement enough as Neo twisted to untangle her currently empty lantern from her side, not having renewed her own fuel source for a time and thus sticking to the combination of well lit areas and Screech's assistance to wander the dungeons.

Betore she could ask, Maggie was floating nearby, waiting until Neo opened her lantern before scooping up some of the coals, flicking the still burning embers into the lantern and shutting the door with a soft chink.

Absolutely flabbergasted, Neo nudged the lantern, delighted to find the flames still burned strongly, yet no heat was produced. She manouvered it back to its place, bowing her head slowly in thanks for the delightful tool.

Instead of responding, Fetch turned around once more? Standing still as she said simply "I would like to find a dragon today," and waiting for Neo to stand by her side before she was off again, into the furnace with their cold flame - apparently searching for creatures of myth though knowing Fetch she'd know exactly where one existed if it indeed did.

You find a lit brazier, impossibly old and emanating a rare chill into the furnace. its flames seem to never burn away the coal. Do you take it, or leave it be?
