[DD1] Strangers in the Distance
Still excited by her very first success, Paige practically frolicked with Cinder, trotting along the passageway as her wolf wove beneath her legs, neither concerned for the others welfare due to the trust they already shared.
She hummed as she trotted along, the tune the one the mushrooms had ended up playing to let her in, partly due to the song being catchy, and partly so she didn't forget the notes. She had no skill in music notation, though there were others in the tribe who were adept at it, if she could remember the song, they would be able to add the score to the tribe's maps, while she could note down the positions of each mushroom shed needed to press.
Cinder whined, stopping Paige's humming as wolf and horse tilted heads, trying to pick up the whisper of noise that Cinder had heard being carried through the breeze. Slowly, cautious of the fact they were in an uncharted section of the caves, the pair started forward again, waiting for the odd whisper to happen again so they could follow.
It was louder when they heard it next - garbelled gibberish to Paige's ears but unmistakeably present, and coming from the walls? They were well outside her tribe's territory, so it wouldn't be untoward to bump into strangers, though the voices, if they spoke a language, made no sense to her at all. She hadn't seen any territory markers either, so she knew she hadn't crossed into a neighbouring pack - and even if the physical signs weren't there, Cinder hadn't alerted her to any scent markings that would trigger the appropriate behaviour to request access to land that wasn't theirs. ... she wasn't about to go and start a territory war with another pack her first official day out.
Slowed by the mystery, Paige nudged the wall with her nose, Cinder immediately pushing forward to scratch at the stone in case there was some dirt or something there blocking the culprits from view.
Nothing
"Well... it's not technically my job buuuuut...." Paige mused, looking at Cinder as she stretched out but in a higher pitch - an opening for another horse to finish the sentence except it was only the two of them.
Not that that stopped Cinder from huffing her agreement, nudging past Paige to lead the way, ears focussed on the wall of voices as she tried to find a way through, knowing that Paige would be following behind, trying to decipher the words but never having any luck.
Indistinguishable whispers are bouncing off the walls of the cavern. However your mind tries to rationalize what you’re hearing, you can’t deny that they sound real. How do you react?
