The Tales of the Empty Grave: 0003

They chose the next direction arbitrarily and ended up coming across a strange prison. Quillerian took the lead in going inside. There was a long narrow corridor and on either side there were cells. A quick check inside the cells revealed that each was filled with bones of deceased coursers, though they seemed to have had a smaller frame.

"What a strange place, and what a way to die," Benedict commented, "I suppose they starved to death."

"None of them seemed to try to escape. I think they were slain in the cells," Quill said flatly.

Phaze teleported inside of one of them and started to look around while Ruin went to the rooms at the end of the corridor and investigated there.

"Does our rule about not raising coursers count with these smaller one?" Benedict asked in a whisper.

"It doesn't," Quillerian said flatly, "I think we have found a real treasure trove here."

"It is a pity there are only eight stalls, not enough for each of us to get one," Benedict lamented.

"We may find more in these areas," Quill stated, "Didn't Jordan mention that in the long dead past the ancestors of our kind were beasts of burden?"

"Ah, you're right. How exciting," Benedict murmured, "Should we raise them here or collect the bones and return."

Quillerian seemed to be considering that when Phaze reappeared next to them.

"They are long dead, the death energy has completely receded and there are no lingering spirits," Phaze explained, "We can use them as we wish without doing any rites first."

Hearing that allowed Quillerian to make up his mind.

"We'll take them with us," he decided, "We can let Jordan and Evan decide distribution. No doubt they will have to raise a couple and practice formations and such before they determine best usage."

"Alright, we'll have to break open the cells or- .."

Phaze was giving him a look as if he had lost it so Benedict quickly changed his words, "Or we let Phaze go in and get them."

Quillerian snickered and left the two of them with that task while he went back to see what Ruin was doing.

Ruin had found a store room that was filled with old barrels and strange leather equipment.

"I think some of these were devices or torture but I can't figure out some of the others," Ruin admitted, "I am sure if they will be useful."

"I think they will be, we are going to raise the ancestors as warriors so Phaze and Benedict are gathering the bones."

"There is no lingering resentment or energy?" Ruin asked and he sounded surprised.

Quillerian could understand why.

"They have simply been dead too long ago. Luckily the environment here has preserved the bones well enough for us to use them," Quillerian told him.

"That's exciting. It'll be interesting to see what Jordan cooks up."

Quillerian nodded in agreement.

"I think we should take these contraptions as well, Jordan may have some insight into how they should be used," Ruin suggested.

"You are suggesting putting possible torture devices for coursers into his hands?" Quill asked him.

Ruin had a look in his eyes as if his life was flashing before his eyes. Wordlessly he put back down the leather straps he had been picking up and stepped away from the pile of gear.

Quillerian chuckled to himself.

The two of them returned to find Phaze clearing out the last stall.

"He also found some coins and other valuables in some of the stalls. It was stashed as if hidden," Benedict explained, "I don't know why that would be."

Quill didn't lend any of his brain energy to it. He looked at the heavy pack on the ground, and the other one which was already full and one Benedict's back and he summoned his skeletal servant and directed it to pick up the pack and also take the other one from Benedict. It was able to lift them as if they were weightless.

"You should send it back to the camp with these," Ruin suggested.

Quillerian had no such intention. While he was able to do long distance piloting he was not so sure that the servant would not meet some traveler or even a team like the one that had stumbled into the heart of his study the other day.

"I'm fine with scouting at a slightly lower speed," Quill answered and that was the last word on the matter.
