[DD1] [Khatuna] 1. Wake Up

I remember very little of what happened to me.

I remember very little of myself.

I remember being born in darkness, small, alone, helpless and afraid.

I remember being found and cared for.

Why can't I remember their faces?

The dungeon was dark, was it ever not dark? Khatuna felt like she had been the darkness for an eternity. Maybe she had been. Maybe she had been here all along. Her memories screamed that she once knew others, but the memories were faded and smudged. Their names, their voices, what they looked like it was all nothing, just fragments that showed that something was once there but now little remained. What happened in the dungeons? Why were these memories gone. How long had they been gone? Were they ever there?

"You're lost."

A voice in the dark. Its voice held no emotion. It was not a question but a statement of fact.

"I am."

Khatuna's voice came out smooth, a light and pleasant sound. Her voice didn't even creak from ill-use.

"From one lost soul to another, perhaps we can help each other find what we have lost. I seek something that was stolen from me, looking at you I imagine we are one in the same, Courser."

The word, Courser, it clawed at her mind like a scrabbling beast trying to scurry its way into a locked shelter. That word was important, but why?

"I would rather be lost together than lost alone."

"As would I."

Leathery wings beat beside her as something hopped on to her back. Whatever it was, it was cold with rough skin. It had small, sharp claws that pinched and poked at her back. It was clear that the beast was not trying to hurt her, it was in its nature to be sharp and dangerous. She wondered if she was meant to be similar. The thought intrigued her.

Wordlessly she carried the beast through the dark, aimless but no longer alone.

Clang, clang, clang!

"A forge," Why did she know that? Everything else was lost but not this. "We should go there."

"We should arm ourselves for the trouble that lurks in the dark. We should be careful. A forge does not create by itself, someone is there."

Indeed there was another there. A courser, a feytouched puck with a glossy green coat. He stood in front of a golem who was working the forge and turned as Khatuna stepped into the room. "Well now aren't you an interesting pair?"

The light of the forge's flame was enough for her to finally see her companion. A small reptilian beast with green scales. It's leathery wings were a lavender tone. It's eyes, it's eyes were powerful. Red like fiery rubies. The same as her's she realized. They held a promise for danger and she wondered if she would want to see this danger come to fruition.

Khatuna finally acknowledged the older Puck, "Greetings, my companion and I are lost."

"I suppose you're looking to reach the top-side?" The top-side of what was unclear but perhaps it was a good place to start.

"If you would be so kind," Khatuna began to ask but stopped as the old Puck grumbled something to himself.

"Alright, come follow me."

"I don't believe the top-side will have what we seek," The drake whispered his uncertainty. It was almost a certainty that the top-side would not have what they sought, but she would not turn away, not until she was certain.
