[DD1] Dreams of Silk - Cal

The moment after Terrence said good by at the surface, Cadastrel had turned around and headed back into the dungeon.
They didn't intend to go far, indeed they knew exactly where they wanted to go long before they'd even gotten all the way up to the surface.

Staring into the room now, they were glad they'd come down here. Their thoughts had been correct, though, on a much, much larger scale than they would've anticipated.
The sheer amount of silk swathed about the room was actually impossible to fathom. Careful not to disturb anything, Cal moved over to one particularly large bunch of the stuff and collected a small sample. If the silk was worth coming back for, they'd soon find out.

In the meantime, they stared up in awe, jaw actually dropping at the size of the cocoons hanging far over head. They could hardly imagine how large the bugs would be when fully formed. What little there was to see of the actual insects themselves suggested something larger than a dungeon courser. That wasn't too surprising. The flora and fauna here below was well known to get largely out of hand when it came to size. Spiders, for one thing, had gotten large enough to prey on passing coursers. And there were many tales of folks crossing the backs of centipedes they had mistaken for a bridge.

Cal wondered, quietly to their self, how much silk a single worm could create. How many worms would it take to absolutely ruin the current silk trade? It would only take two to start it. But where could they even keep them? Even the largest barns wouldn't be enough to contain all the silk of a single worm, Cal dared to guess. The ideas quickly whirled out of hand, and the idea of all the riches it could bring left them speechless. Partly due to the idea of all that money, partly due to the fact that Cadastrel Azimuth had entertained the thought of it. There was no telling how much harm, touching one of those cocoons or trying to bring one above ground could do. And what it might do to the economy? They blinked and shook their head.

They had decided. No more of this thinking and no more of that talk.
They quickly grabbed the sample they'd stowed in their bag and gently set it onto a heavy stretch of silk, they stared at it a long moment before stepping back and then casting their gaze skyward.

"I will keep you safe." They promised aloud, barely daring to speak as the growing pupae stirred overhead.

Just a short little something for this dungeon dive.

You enter a room in the Caverns full of massive, dangling pillars of silk. Upon further inspection, they are cocoons; in the light, you can see various giant caterpillars and moths in various stages of transformation. These vulnerable creatures could be valuable, but you’re not sure what dangers they may pose if disturbed. What do you do?
