[DD1] DD1 - Kida and the plant
Deep within the overgrown caverns, Kida trotted cautiously, her ears swiveling at every distant sound. The air was thick with the smell of damp earth and the faint sweetness of blooming fungi. Pale light filtered through cracks in the rocky ceiling, casting eerie shadows on the thick vines that snaked along the tunnel walls.
The further she ventured, the more oppressive the vines became, winding together in a twisting maze. Their glossy green leaves shimmered unnaturally, and faint movements in the shadows made Kida's skin prickle. The tunnel narrowed, forcing her to pick her steps carefully over protruding roots. She paused, her sharp eyes catching the glint of something unusual, a faint shimmer in the dark ahead.
As the tunnel opened up, Kida froze. In the center of the cavern stood a massive pitcher plant, its bulbous base the size of a small hut. Its fleshy walls glistened with sticky nectar, and translucent veins pulsed with an eerie green glow. Kida's nostrils flared as the acrid stench of decay hit her. Inside the plant's gaping maw, she could make out tangled skeletons and partially digested bodies, Dungeon Coursers like herself, their remains caught in the grip of the monstrous plant's acidic trap.
Her instincts screamed at her to flee, but before she could act, the pitcher plant stirred. With a grotesque squelch, it leaned toward her, its lid snapping open wider. A glob of sizzling acid shot from its maw, splattering on the ground where Kida had been standing moments before. She lunged sideways, her hooves striking sparks from the cavern floor as she bolted toward the tunnel.
But the plant wasn't done. Thick vines lashed out like striking snakes, their thorny tips aiming to ensnare her. Kida wheeled around, her muscles coiling like springs as she dodged one vine after another. A particularly fast tendril grazed her side, leaving a shallow cut that stung fiercely.
Adrenaline surged through her veins as she spotted a gap between two looming clusters of vines. Gathering all her strength, she barreled forward, her hooves pounding the earth. The vines lunged for her, but she was too quick. With a final leap, she cleared the writhing tangle and darted back into the narrow tunnel.
Behind her, the plant let out a low, guttural sound, its vines thrashing in frustration. Kida didn’t stop until the oppressive smell of decay was far behind her. Breathing hard, she paused in a small clearing where the vines grew thinner. She could feel the faint sting of her wound, but it was a small price to pay for her escape.
As she caught her breath, Kida glanced back at the dark tunnel, her eyes narrowing. The overgrown caverns were more dangerous than she'd imagined—but something about this place whispered to her, daring her to delve deeper.
For now, though, she would regroup. The monstrous plant had won this round, but Kida wasn’t done with the caverns. Not yet.
Oof, Kida's first dive was a rough one!
