Who's Digging Pits?

Dive Prompt: AHHHH! You’ve accidentally fallen into a spike pit. Classic. How do you avoid being impaled?

Event Prompt: The Harvester warns you that not all spirits are peaceful. Some of them burn with a rage they did not come by on their own in life. One night, you encounter a spectral animal – a Courser, you think at first, but no. This is no Courser, but a monster in Courser shape. Its eyes glow red with malice; its skull is gaunt, its movements predatory, more wolf than equine. You can feel its corruption. Its wrongness. Do you attempt to help the Harvester apprehend it, or do you flee?

Izem pouted as he walked away from the potential prize. While he was interested in the slime he didn’t want to disrespect the other courser by going after it after being asked to leave it alone.
“I’ll just find treasure elsewhere… hopefully… preferably before we find an exit,” he grumbled to himself.
The bushes rustled, making the cat-looking courser freeze.
“Merildis?”
“Yes?”
Izem nearly jumped as the puck came out of the bushes behind them.
“Wait… if you’re there, then what is that?”
The bushes in front of the two rustled again, then began to part. At first they thought maybe the slime had returned for some reason, but as Merildis’ eyes went wide with terror Izem knew they were in trouble.
Red eyes peered at them, sunken into a skull like a courser twisting unnaturally to the side as it eyed up the two. Saggy black skin clung to nothing but bone, looking like it could be torn at any second like paper. The gaping holes in its sides indicated this was no mortal creature they could easily kill. Merildis had tried after all, hence the wounds.
“I think I made it angry…” she squeaked.
“Run…” Izem replied.
“What?”
“RUN!”
The creature screeched in response and charged forward. Spinning around, both courses charged blindly away into the thick brush of the Overgrown Caverns. Swallowed by the shadows they fled the creature who ran near silently behind them. Like prey being chased by a creature who moved more like a wolf than a courser, fear enveloped them.
“JUMP!” Meridlis yelled from in front.
“What?!”
Before Izem could process the word the rabbit-like courser leaped over a dark pit and Izem slid right into it.
“AHHHH!”
“Gotcha!”
Stones and dirt crumbled off the edge around him as Merildis bit down upon his harness. Swinging above the spike below, the cat-like courser was frozen in fear. Below was the risk of impalement and above the screech of a monster determined to make the coursers its next meal.
SCREEEEEEEEEEE!
The creature cried as Merildis pulled Izem up. Luckily there was no way around for the creature but that did not stop the two from fleeing full speed into the bush and out of sight of the monster, or spirit.
“What was that?!” Izem gasped.
“An evil spirit. The Harvester warned me about them. I may have knocked that one into another spike pit earlier…”
“Dang! I’m impressed, and also assuming that is why you were so terrified earlier?”
“Yeah…”
“Well, let's find a way out before that thing finds us again.”
Merildis nodded and followed Izem away from the pit, the two now more determined than ever to stick together for safety.
