[DD1] Like A Bat Out Of Hell

Winona and her Osprey Skylar were accompanied by Czar for this trip, both hoping to get twice as much loot with two of them present. Czar would occasionally pipe up to get Winona's attention towards the cavern's wildlife, knowing that she quite likes animals. She was pleased with this trip so far, having no real bad luck and even finding some discarded pieces of equipment that they could themselves possibly wear for protection if they could get said equipment to fit their comically contrasting heights.

She stood still as she looked into the room ahead, holding out a hoof to get Czar to stop going any further ahead. Skylar would land on her back with a silent flap, having also noticed that the cave ahead had something quite important to be careful about.

"What...what do you see?" he asked her, he knew that she wouldn't stop them moving for no reason and as she made a quiet grunt along with a small head movement up towards the ceiling, she was indeed stopping them for a reason as a large colony of bats were roosting inverted on the cave ceiling, sleeping peacefully. The red roan couldn't tell in the dimly lit caverns if these bats were of the Painted or Dracula variety, which was a problem as the last thing Winona wanted was for the bats to be of the blood-sucking kind.

Being bigger and more unbothered by the potential danger, the roan giant would be the one to go first and see if there was a simple and clean path through that would make no noise and get them through quickly. Winona was as careful as she could be with her great big heavy hooves to prevent the disturbance of the large bat colony, slowly moving forwards by her lonesome to find the path of least resistance through the sleeping colony's roost. With every few steps, Winona looked back to check on Czar and Skylar to make sure that they had stayed put and were at a safe distance while she wandered underneath the sleepy bats with ease. A few minutes would pass as she mapped out a perfect route to lead Czar and her Osprey through without trouble.

The roan giant would walk back to them with quick but careful steps, making a sound that almost sounded like 'follow' but yet still somehow a grunt as Winona would proceed with leading Czar and her Osprey on a very deliberate path she had mapped out to get away from the sleeping bats as fast as possible without making a sound. It looked to be going very well for them as they moved slowly, the trio of horses and bird keeping silent as they made quick work of going through the roan giant's carefully planned safe route through.

It wouldn't be long before they were safely through to the opposite side to go further, Winona was internally chuffed with herself for successfully getting her little herd through. They were about to just leave when a sound deeper in the cave that sounded quite feral rang out throughout the caverns, waking the bat colony as the two Coursers turned and watched the colony angrily begin a flapping frenzy.

"Uh, should we run?" the small Courser queried in a rushed manner, watching as the disturbed bat colony flew around in a frenzy. The roan giant did not give him a vocal response as she already had started running. She didn't worry about leaving her friend though, as he was quick to catch up to her as the two ran with Skylar flying further ahead of them. They wouldn't stop galloping until they no longer heard the sounds of the angry bats behind them, a clear indicator that they had escaped from potential danger.

All's well that ends well!

  • Your way forward looks clear at first glance, but a look at the cave ceiling reveals hundreds of bats inverted in slumber. They might be harmless Painted Bats, but they could also be blood-sucking Draculas. What do you do?

decided to start adding the prompt in the comment here so as not to inflate the word count
