[DD2] give gold!

After their last conversation Martzel and Logue continued through the Furnace without further talk, Martzel returning to his stoic silence.

Privately, though, he was still thinking about what Logue had said. He’d called him “mysterious.” Was that true? Martzel had never really considered the way that others might see him before. He supposed he considered himself protective of his privacy, but that was a perfectly natural thing.

His thoughts were interrupted when Logue stopped in front of him. Martzel stopped too, confused and a little bit irritated by the sudden pause, when he saw the shadow pass over the wall and his eyes widened.

“A dragon?” Martzel asked, his voice astoundingly steady. Logue shook his head.

“No, it couldn’t be. That would be crazy.”

“What could it be instead?” Martzel asked, and was quickly answered - not by Logue, but by the appearance of the shadow’s true source. Similar to a dragon, but much, much smaller - a wyrm, flitting about the place Logue and Martzel stood.

“GOLD,” The creature squeaked, spitting a tiny jet of flame.

Martzel snorted, rolling his eyes.

“Shall we continue?” He looked to Logue. Surely they could just ignore this little thing and move on.

“Uh, sure.” Logue replied, and they began walking again. They did not get far, though, as after a few steps Martzel felt the sting of tiny sharp teeth in his hindquarters and instinctively kicked backwards, whinnying. He spun around to see the wyrm hovering in midair, looking smug.

“GIVE GOLD.”

Martzel snorted with irritation, having half a mind to snatch the creature right out of the air, but before he could say anything, Logue spoke.

“We don’t have any gold.” He explained diplomatically.

“GIVE. GOLD.” It spat out flame for emphasis.

“What kind of adventurer brings gold with them into the dungeon? It’s not like there’s anything to spend it on down here.” Martzel huffed. Logue flicked his tail.

“We could give you something else,” Logue offered. Martzel looked at him in shock and dismay. They were really going to humor this little pest?

The wyrm considered Logue’s offer.

“LIKE WHAT?” It asked. Logue rummaged around in one of his packs. He shared a brief glance with Martzel, inviting him to do the same. Martzel groaned and began to rummage in his packs as well. Mostly it was rations, and a few little things he had picked up around the Furnace, including a bit of shiny metal that he pulled out to show the wyrm.
“Is this to your satisfaction.” He said begrudgingly as the wyrm took hold of the piece of metal to examine. After a moment of careful inspection, the wyrm beamed with excitement.

“YES. THIS GOOD.” It cackled as it quickly flew off, leaving Martzel and Logue alone once more.

“Good find.” Logue said, looking amused. Martzel rolled his eyes, and the pair continued their delve into the Furnace.

prompt: The jury isn't out on whether dragons truly lurk in the dungeons. Some veteran adventurers claim to have seen them with their own eyes. Surely they wouldn't be this close to the surface? The shadow you see on the wall begs to differ. You brace yourself to battle the beast - but the creature that accosts you is much smaller. A pesky wyrm coughs its tiny flame at you, mugging you for gold to add to its hoard.
