[DD1] The Hole
Lark stood at the edge of the hole, her hooves planted firmly on the uneven ground of the cavern floor. She had come across many strange things in the dungeon, but something about this hole was different—disturbing. It wasn't just an ordinary pit leading to another level. No, it felt wrong. It seemed to breathe, to pulse with a presence that reached out to her, whispering for her to come closer, to let go and fall into its depths.
Her instinct screamed at her to back away, to turn and leave this place behind. But that pull, that gnawing sensation deep in her gut, refused to let her go. It was a compulsion, an insidious lure that made her muscles twitch as if her body had already decided what it wanted to do, even if her mind fought against it.
Lark was not a Courser easily dominated by fear or hesitation. She was aggressive, intense, a force to be reckoned with, and she had built her reputation on never backing down from a challenge. Whatever it was that called to her, it would have to do more than whisper promises of the unknown to make her falter. But she knew better than to let her pride be her guide. There was something here, something beyond the physical, tugging at the edge of her reason.
"What are you?" Lark muttered under her breath, stepping closer to the mouth of the hole. Her gaze was drawn to the swirling darkness below, as if it were a living thing, stretching and coiling just beyond her sight. She ground her teeth, fighting back the urge to leap into the void.
Her nostrils flared as she inhaled deeply, catching the faint, acrid scent that wafted from the pit. It was subtle, yet unmistakable—a hint of decay, old and forgotten. It wasn’t just the odor that disturbed her, though; it was the sensation that it carried with it. She could almost feel the weight of the centuries pressing down on her, like a thousand unseen eyes watching from the blackness below.
Lark flicked her tail, her aggressive nature flaring to life. "Think you can draw me in?" she growled. "Think again."
Her hooves dug into the moist earth, and she forced herself to take a step back. Every fiber of her being screamed to move forward, to give in to the pull, but she fought against it. She had come too far, fought too many battles, to be undone by a cursed pit in the middle of a dungeon. Her focus narrowed, the intensity of her will wrapping around her like a shield, blocking out the insidious whispers that nipped at her resolve.
Still, she couldn't shake the feeling of something waiting down there—something ancient, malevolent, and hungry. The air around her felt thick, pressing down on her chest, suffocating in its weight. Lark’s ears pinned back as she scanned the surrounding cavern, searching for anything that might explain the overwhelming draw of the pit. Was this some sort of trap, laid by the dungeon’s deeper forces to ensnare the unworthy?
Her mind raced with possibilities, but none of them seemed to explain the sheer force of the pull. It wasn’t just a lure of curiosity or the promise of treasure. No, this was deeper—more primal. It clawed at her from the inside, twisting her instincts against her. She closed her eyes and took another deep breath, centering herself as she had been trained. Her heart hammered in her chest, but she would not let it rule her.
"I’ve faced worse than you," she said softly, almost as if speaking to the pit itself. She thought of the battles she had fought, the enemies she had bested. She remembered the scars that crisscrossed her body—testaments to her strength, her resilience. If this thing wanted to consume her, it would have to try harder.
For a moment, Lark considered leaving—turning her back on the hole and continuing her journey through the dungeon. But then, as if in response to her hesitation, the ground beneath her hooves trembled slightly, a subtle rumble that sent a shockwave through her limbs.
Her eyes snapped open, pupils narrowing as she watched the pit's edge shift ever so slightly. The movement was almost imperceptible, but it was enough to set her on edge. This was no ordinary sinkhole. There was something alive down there—something that wanted her. Badly.
Lark growled, her aggressive side coming to the forefront. "You want me? Come and get me!" she snarled, stamping her hoof against the ground. The vibrations echoed into the hole, but there was no immediate response. Whatever was down there, it was waiting.
Her heart raced, adrenaline coursing through her veins as she calculated her next move. She couldn’t give in to this thing’s pull, but neither could she walk away without knowing what it was. Lark had never been one to shy away from a challenge, but this was different. There was no visible enemy to fight, no obstacle she could overcome through sheer force. It was a test of her mind, her will, and her ability to resist the unknown.
She glanced at the edge of the cavern once more, noting how the faint glow from the crystals embedded in the walls cast an eerie light over the pit. Shadows danced along its edges, twisting and warping as if alive. Lark huffed, shaking her head as she backed further away from the pit’s edge.
“I don’t need to prove anything to you,” she said, her voice steady despite the tension coiling in her muscles. “Whatever you are, I’m not your prey.”
The pull lessened slightly, as if the pit understood her defiance, but it didn’t disappear entirely. The compulsion remained, a faint whisper at the back of her mind, urging her to reconsider, to take that final step into the unknown.
But Lark was no fool. She knew when to fight and when to retreat. Without another glance, she turned her back on the pit and began to walk away, her hoofsteps echoing softly in the cavern. The pull still gnawed at her, but she would not be swayed. Not today. Not ever.
Lark left the cursed hole behind, her mind focused and her body tense, knowing that whatever force lay within would have to wait for another unsuspecting victim. She had passed its test—and in doing so, proved once again that she was no ordinary Courser.
