[DD1] when the stomach rolls

"This is a good place to make camp." Benegar threw down his bedroll, standing tall and proud in a small alcove off the main passages. It was large enough for himself and his squire to easily fit comfortably, while not having to be concerned with corners shrouded in shadow. The dirt floors were cool, but the ceilings were high and open into a mess of roots that intersected through a deep seam. Their shadows cast upon one another was haunting, if you were spooked by that sort of thing. Benegar was already lipping at his breast straps when Ailith tossed down her own pack. Her umber face was sour, ears turned back, and a small frown tugged at the corners of her lips. If Benegar didn't know better, he'd say that the flick of her tail wasn't just an unconscious thing, but an additional sign of her ire.

"You alright?" He questioned cooly, his saddlebags loosening and slipping down to the floor.

"Fine, just a little hungry is all, sir," Ailith responded almost immediately lifting her head high with an affirmative nod in his direction. Benegar's dark orbs swept over her, the tightness of her stance and the stiffness of the at-attention posture.

"You can relax, we're making camp. No need to be on all the time," He chuckled at her as he glanced around, "Now help me find some good sized rocks so we can make a small fire."

"Yessir," was all Ailith said before she too started digging around the space to for stones.

An orange glow washed over the room and their faces as they sat around the small fire. They had found some pebbles and smaller rocks to help contain any wayward flames, but it was a rather pitiful excuse for a campfire in Ailith's opinion. Benegar seemed unbothered, holding a skewer with some mushrooms they'd foraged in the dungeon over the flames. They were darkening from their pale yellow color, turning a silver-brown, and shriveling from the heat. After a moment, Benegar took them from the flames and sat them in a cast iron pot he'd brought with his pack, steam rolling off of them and dispersing into the darkness.

"You can have the first batch since you're so hungry," he commented with a gesture towards them, "Just let em cool a bit."

"Cave mushrooms?" She questioned, her brow pricked and head tilted away. She eyed the cooked fungi with a curled lip.

"Sometimes you have to supplement rations with what you can find along the way - it's the best way to prolong your journey. Don't tell me they didn't teach you that in the academy?"

"They did, but..." Her voice trailed off, and Benegar couldn't tell if she'd just forgotten what to say or didn't want to say it. After a moment of pause, and a few flicking glances towards Benegar's way, Ailith inched over and took the mushrooms, nibbling at them with some apprehension. Benegar produced another skewer and stabbed at a couple other caps he'd foraged before hanging them over the fire to cook. A gurgle betrayed his now aching stomach.
